Lotion for baby?

Hi ladies,

Wondering if any of you use lotion on your babies and, if so, what kind? Chloe is just over two months and we haven't used any lotion on her yet. We bath her about two or three times a week.

I want to make sure that I am using the safest stuff I can with my LO. For baths I've been using Johnsons head to toe wash (the new formula). I have Johnson baby lotion and Shea Moisture baby healing lotion, but I'm not sure about the safety of the ingredients. (Truth be told, I can't even READ the ingredients list as I need reading glasses, which I plan to buy today. Welcome to motherhood at 43, lol!)

Just wanted to get some of your thoughts.

I use the Johnson and Johnson products because my brother in law works for the company so I get stuff through him for super cheap but I have used some of the Honest products too. My little guy has sensitive skin and in the winter he especially becomes prone to eczema so I have used the Aveno Eczema therapy.

I used cream on both my kids from the beginning and had no ill effects. I actually preferred the Johnson and Johnson products over some of the Honest products. I got the Honest big bottle of all over body wash at Costco and it dried out my daughters hair and the smell was ehhhhhh. I will admit I am not overly nutty about this stuff. If you are looking for a more natural cream I have used and really like coconut oil as well.

Baby Aquaphor!!! Since the beginning! Her skin is like a dream. And I bathe her every night. And before that she was starting to get papery dry. Try it! It's cheaper on amazon. Plus it doubles as a moisture barrier for the diaper area.

We use Eucerine and Cerave lotion since both DS have eczema. Because of this I am really careful with soap and lotion with them. Look at the "Think Dirty" app you can scan everything in your house (or at the store) and it tells you how healthy or unhealthy it is. No need for tons of research. J&J is way less expensive though so if your LO doesn't have a lot of skin issues then I think it's safe to stick with it.

We use Johnson & Johnson. I've heard lots of negative things about ingredients but not just about J&J. I've heard bad things about Aveeno too. I still use J&J because my kids don't have any sensitivity issues and it seems to be fine. I sometimes use it myself honestly!! I buy the vanilla scent when I use it for me. Lol.

I also really like the babyganics brand too. I usually get it at Target. I've used a lot of their stuff. I like the sunscreen. The foaming hand sanitizer. Lotions. Wipes.

I've never really been impressed with the honest brand. I've tried a ton of stuff. The only thing I actually liked was the healing balm.

We don't use any lotion on our little guy. Our pediatrician said it's really not necessary, and he hasn't had any skin issues like eczema to deal with, so I'm not going to add an extra step to our already traumatic, screaming, crying bath time.

Also, regarding the safety of ingredients, I am a firm believer that there's a lot of over-hyped scare tactics out there. Case in point - research has shown that in order to be exposed to carcinogenic levels of formaldehyde from the old formula of J&J products, you would have to take 40 million baths in one day (there was a really good article about this on Slate a while back). Remember, even water can kill you if you drink enough of it - the dose makes the poison!

I've used Cetaphil a few times on his legs, when they seem dry. Otherwise, no need for lotion... If I was using something every day, I'd probably do something organic (e.g. shea- or argan-based).

Funny, I was kinda wondering about this too. We haven't used lotion yet, not because we're opposed to it, but because he hasn't seemed to need it. Other than a little cradle cap, his skin has been baby soft. But baby lotion is so popular, I thought I was missing something. Guess it just depends on the baby

Mindaa brought up a good point. If you don't need it I wouldn't bother with it. It was such a pain in the #@#$ especially when they were teenie tiny trying to get a slick baby into a diaper and clothes was sometimes a comedy of errors. I needed it for both kids because they unfortunately inherited my dry and sensitive skin so they had to be slathered but I only used it when I needed it.

I think it just depends on baby's skin. I think Johnson & Johnson's product smell sooo good, but they dry my daughter's skin out. For baths we used Aquaphor or Ology (from Walgreens). They are fragrance free. For lotion, we use coconut oil. For daycare purposes, I supply Eucerin/Aquaphor or Baby Aveeno. The latter is coincidentlly made by Johnson & Johnson.

We have used Burt's Bees Baby Bee products from the very beginning and we love them. But we have never done daily baths and we only use lotion if she has dry skin, we've never needed to use it regularly. Whenever she had any little baby eczema bumps or red chin from drooling we used the multipurpose ointment and it cleared right up. For me, I wanted something safe that we liked the scent. I think there are a lot of good products out there, you just have to find one you like. If you bathe daily it does dry out their skin and you will find yourself using lotion more often.

I use Burts Bees body wash and lotion on both of my kids since birth. No skin reaction. I know they may not need the lotion but it's part of the bedtime routine to do a mini baby massage with it. Agree there's a lot of overly hyped reaction to ingredients.
