No ultrasound til 20 weeks?

I keep hearing about everyone getting early ultrasounds, or even getting 12 week ultrasounds.  I got them with my previous doctor, but my new doctor doesn't do any ultrasounds until 20 weeks unless there are problems.
Anyone else?  I am the only one who doesn't get to see LO until then?

I'm not sure. I just scheduled my first appointment it's in 4 weeks when I'm 8. The nurse scheduling it didn't offer up too much info but I am guessing that I probably won't get an ultrasound until 20 weeks. The more I think about it practically, if the ultrasound isn't medically necessary, then I'm ok with not getting it. That's more $ to save for the baby.

ETA: I keep hearing everyone going in right away for bloodwork and stuff and I don't have that either, I have to wait.

  • Same boat. I'll hear a heartbeat at 12 weeks and get an US at 20 weeks. I'm doing low-technology through a midwife group.

  • My old doc did an 8-10 week scan for dating purposes (I had a different doc for the first 13 weeks until she retired and I got the one I have now). I'm not sure if this one will or not but I will be declining it and waiting until 20 weeks. I know exactly when I conceived so unless my doc says I have to have it for any medical reason, I have no issues waiting. Like pp said, saving the money! My DD, with birth and all prenatal stuff, was more than $5,000 out of my pocket. We are now a one income family can really, really need to keep expenses down.

  • I have a feeling I'm in the same boat as you. When I asked yesterday, the nurse said "some doctors do and some don't." Uh, that's super helpful, can you tell me what my doctor does? Do you really want to make a pregnant lady cry? Cranky nurse.
  • I've heard of this but luckily my doc does a scan at 8-10 weeks.  I'm definitely doing it because that is the point last time they couldn't see/hear a heartbeat.  I will be on edge until then!!

Adding: There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting an early ultrasound. I've been that route and, for me, all it really did was cost me an extra $300. So going to avoid this time around. But I don't think that needs to be the case for all people. Didn't want anyone to think I was making a blanket statement or was against early ultrasounds. :)

  • 20 weeks for me. I'll get to hear the heartbeat at 10 weeks, but unless they run into any issues with my labs then nothing till Christmas time. I can get one if I want, but I would have to go outside of my midwife group and most likely have to pay out of pocket, so I'll settle I guess. I'll be crazy by the time I get one I'm sure.
  • Glad I'm not alone in this at least!
  • I just looked at my doctor's obstetrical calendar and it says we will listen to the fetal heart beat at 12 weeks and ultrasound isn't listed until 20 weeks either. It looks like that will be my one and only ultrasound unless there are complications.

  • My doctor doesn't do a ultrasound until 18-20 weeks. My first appt will include peeing in a cup and Q/A. That is all
  • I went in today for a confirmation of pregnancy and dating u/s appointment. Based on my LMP I should be 7w but when we got the u/s there was literally nothing there see. His words " I don't see anything, that might be a sac" So he sent me for BW of HCG and progesterone levels and go back Thursday to compare the progress. Once he has the results then we will schedule for another appt. around 8 weeks. They are going to do another u/s at 12. Im so sorry for you ladies who have to wait til 20w.

@pooputtette - so just a question - you say based on your LMP you should be around 7 weeks but your ticker is saying 4 weeks. Not saying that a ticker is an end all/be all but is there anyway you may not be as far along as you thought? I know that if you really are only 4 weeks pregnant, having an US would be hard. Thoughts? Regardless, I hope everything is ok and I'm keeping my fx for you!
  • @mrstmoose  Because I know exactly when I O'd and it was so late- thats what I based my ticker on. So that puts me 3w behind my supposedly 7w from LMP. The doc only accounted for LMP when scheduling.
  • @pooputtette so maybe it was just super early for an u/s?
  • I've heard a wide variety of dates for US from friends of mine that go to the same clinic. I think some of it depends on what your insurance covers and some depends on the provider's preference and medical necessity. I had one yesterday at just over 6 weeks (due to a previous complication, otherwise it would have been 8 weeks) and a friend of mine didn't have hers until 20 weeks. Hopefully the wait won't feel TOO long! Good luck and congrats!
  • @mrstmoose Yes exactly :) I knew that going in so I wasn't expecting anything. Actually I found it kinda comical. Moving the wand around trying to find something and not saying anything. He finally gave up and said I don't see anything.
  • @pooputtette I wish doctors would listen to us...like once in awhile.
  • @mrstmoose Haha! I know but he's a very good doctor and I like him a lot.
  • With my daughter I had to wait till 20wks but I am excited this time (with a different practice) I get a dating , 20wks, and most likely an estimated weight at 37wks. Although I did survive somehow the 20wks the first time around :-)
  • I'm spoiled. My doctor does one at every visit. I had a major stomach bug and low progesterone so I've been in some extra times, but it's standard in my practice for it to be every visit.

  • I'll be getting the NT scan hopefully done around 12 weeks, but otherwise I probably won't get another till the growth scan around 20 weeks. It all really depends on my insurance and how quickly I can get everything scheduled once we finish up our move. We'll see I guess!

We only have an u/s machine at the hospital, not at the office so all but emergency ones have to be scheduled. If I lived 45 minutes away, it would be a different story.

  • Luckily we had a viability ultrasound so we got to see the little bean and see the heartbeat at 7 weeks. But I called and we won't do another ultrasound until 20 weeks...I'm so jealous of all the ladies who get 12 week scans!!!

    Ditto!

Same with me. Only at 1 visit they didn't do it. And I went in a lot. Luckily I have good insurance so I think I maybe pay like $20 each us. If it was like $100 I'd pass on so many bc a lot of times it seemed frivolous.
  • In New Zealand we get 3 ultra sounds-one at about 7-8 weeks, and then another one at 12 weeks and the last one at 20 weeks.
  • @mrstmoose Last night I told my H about my appointment and he FLIPPED out bc they did the u/s and didn't listen to me on when I conceived. "you need to find a new doctor, thats stupid" I just told him its fine and I'm not changing OBs. LOL
