Newborn diapers

Quick question:

How long do newborns usually stay in newborn sized diapers? I'm a FTM, and know zip about diaper sizes.

Thanks!

Re: Newborn diapers

  • It depends on size of baby and how quick they grow. My little dude now is 11 days old and will be going into size 1s when we are done with this package of newborns. (We used 2 packs). My last baby was tiny and wore newborn size for 2 months. I usually switch out when they start to have multiple leaks and fit is snug.

  • We're at 4 weeks and my little guy is probably around 9 lbs and still on newborn. I tried a size 1 today just to see and it was still way too big on him.
  • It really depends on his size. I know pampers newborn go up to 8lbs while their size 1 start at 8lbs. There isn't much difference if your LO is around that weight. You'll know they are too small when they start leaking haha that was always my clue.
  • So how many diapers should we get for a month? Sorry I'm so clueless! I'm getting induced in two days and freaking out!
  • Oh, I thought size 1 means 1 month old, aize 2 means 2 months old, and size 3 equals 3 months old and so on. So it goes on pounds?
  • Haha oh your LO isn't here yet. I only got a small pack of newborns because I have big babies (DS1 was 8lb 12oz). I got a bigger box of size 1 because I knew we would use them longer. Um I have no idea for a month haha I'm a STM and can't stock for that long.
  • Little guy is 19 days and still ok newborn, I think I may have another week or 2 before he goes up a size. He's 7 lbs 6 oz
  • I got one small pack of newborn diapers and the hospital gave me a smaller one to take home. They will probably be gone by tomorrow, maybe Thursday at the latest. Baby will be one week old on Thursday at was 7 lb 6 oz today at the doctor. I'm just going to move to size 1.
For the size, the weight is on the pack. You'll see it when you're in the aisle.
I always found it was better to move up early than stay in the small ones too long.
  • My lil guy is 3wks old and he's still wearing newborns. He's long and skinny. It will be maybe another month before he goes up in a diaper.
  • My LO will be 4 weeks tomorrow and 8.47 lbs and is still in newborn. I was at the doctors yesterday and actually asked him about when to change to size 1 and he told me I still have a pound to go before I need to change. Like you I am a FTM and am clueless about this! I have went through about a package a week (40-50 diapers a week) I will say LO doesn't cry or fuss when she has a dirty diaper so I fee like I could change her a lot more then that if I knew she was wet. I use pampers swaddled and haven't had any blow out or leakages yet! Good luck!

My little guy is 3 weeks and probably 9.5 lbs or so and is still in newborn. We ran out of newborn and used size 1 for a few days and they didn't leak, but they were definitely too big for him. We're using Pampers Swaddlers. I'm guessing we'll use newborn size for a few more weeks. (FYI: He doesn't fit into newborn clothing and was in size 0-3 from birth; he was 8 lbs 10 oz at birth.) We go through probably 8-12 diapers a day.
  • Little one was 8lb4oz at her last check in, over a week ago (she's 16 days now) and so in nb disputes. It hadn't occurred to me that she was even ready for the next size up, but I'm waiting to switch her to cloth diapers when her thighs fatten up. I was sizing up my stash and she's not quite ready yet. I put her on a prefold with a smaller Velcro rubber cover that fit alright today but she's still too chicken legged for the one size fits all cloth diapers
  • Dang...I had no idea so many diapers are used per day. Oh man. I guess diapers are a lot of trial and error!
  • Any thoughts on diapers.com?

Love it. They also have an auto ship option so you don't have to worry about ordering them every month.
  • You typically go through 14 diapers a day for the first 3 months...and you can't always go by the weight on the box...my DS is 2.5 years old and in a 5 for his urine amount but has 5lbs to go to get to the weight min on the box. Same goes for each size once they leak or poop up their back a couple times in a day move up a size.
  • We stayed in nb for about 2 weeks. We started having a few leaks so I moved to size 1. We used the pampers swaddlers for nb but switched to Luvs for size 1. We tried Huggies for a day but she leaked through everyone I used.
  • We just had to return all of our newborn diapers because I had a ten pound baby who started in size one.
  • DS was 11 lbs at birth and never got to wear newborn anything!'
We were gifted tons of diapers, so I plan to take back the newborns and trade when it is time.

What are your favorite brands?? I was given mostly pampers swaddled, but I think that I am liking Luvs better at this point!

    I was an 11lb baby too!! :)
I like huggies, but it's probably a lot preference. Yours and baby's. DD2 has eczema, and she does well with huggies diapers and wipes.

As far as how many to buy. I'd just buy one newborn box or pack, but not open it. And maybe a couple boxes of 1s. That way you should be covers for a little bit, before having to pick up more.
DD1 weighed 7lb 12oz at birth and stayed in newborn over a month, but she's long and slim.
DD2 probably wore them 3 weeks, she was 8lb 2oz.
S is 8.5 weeks actual, 39 weeks adjusted and we're still in preemies. Her little legs are chubby enough to wear newborns yet, ahes long and slim build as well!
  • I have pampers for all my diapers but just wanted to suggest the huggies we have for her newborn. They have a cut out for the umbilical cord. Love them. Yes we could fold it down but I figure this is prob. Little more comfortable maybe?! I really like them!
