newborn not sleeping in bassinet

hi everyone, I've been a lurker since i found out i was pregnant with number 2. A little background, DS will be 17 months on Sunday, and DD will be 3 weeks on Friday. I am a stay at home Mom, and DH or someone else has been with DS since coming home from the hospital since i had to have a c-section.
Every once in a while DD will take a nice nap in her bassinet or playpen, but lately she'll wake up after only 20 minutes. At nighttime she'll only sleep in her bassinet for 20-30 mins at a time. If she is on me she'll easily sleep for 2-3 hours, if not a little longer.
Since i will start having both kids alone next week i will not be able to hold her for her naps, and will need better sleep at night. Any suggestions on how to get her to sleep on her own for longer periods of time? We tried moving the bassinet closer to the heater, playing music at night, etc. She does not like being swaddled, so I'm swaddling with arms out to keep her warmer. Any help would be appreciated!

  • Congratulations on your new little one!
Our DS is 5 weeks old and for the first little bit he was doing the same, fussy in bassinet and would only sleep for an hour max but could sleep hours on my husband or myself. Having said that we have a strict routine with our 20 month old DD so it really helped to get DS into a routine. After DD was asleep; it was bath time, fresh undershirt and Jammie's( cold up here in Canada) sleep, and eat, sleep and eat with me or hubby, about 10 min before wanting him in his crib we put a heating pad on in his bassinet to warm it up and get his swaddle blanket ready, last diaper change and On the boob for one last feed, good burp and in the swaddle... And in the crib asleep or not. He sleeps better if he goes in awake but sleepy. With that routine( the time might vary weekday to weekend) he sleeps about 5-6 hours straight. Hope this helps and that you are able to get some rest soon :)
