Maternity/Nursing Bra

So my normally 34D boobs have gotten so big I am busting out of my current bra. I know that this is going to continue so I am thinking about getting a maternity/nursing bra in the next few weeks (primarily because I'd rather be comfortable over anything).

How do you go about getting a bra when you don't know what size you will end up? How much room do you allow to grow but not too much so you look frumpy? Any thoughts/ideas on this?

Re: Maternity/Nursing Bra

  • My boobs didn't get bigger last time in the first 10 weeks (thank god - I'm a 38F) or sore, so I will probably not have this issue.  But maybe a sports bra that has some stretch to it? That's a good question, never thought about it....

  • Oh hey! @benicode =))

I couldn't imagine having F's (although I may be on my way). I can wear a sports bra at home/night but during work it really isn't possible (without looking strange underneath my clothes). Guess I'll just have to estimate when I'm trying them on. They are getting big enough that my sports bra is going to be a struggle to get on and off.

Yeah I didn't think the sports bra would be ideal under work clothes...I have to buy good/expensive bras so I'm going to try to hold onto mine as long as I can.  Maybe get a cheapo one as you grow so you don't have to spend a ton?

I hate not being able to wear normal button down shirts!!!

  • Oh, I gave up on those a long time ago! Sometimes it's a struggle to get my shirts over them!
  • My boobs went from 36C to D seemingly overnight. Seriously my bra fit just two days ago. DH bought me a couple $10 Walmart bras because if I follow my family pattern I've still got 3 cups sizes to grow before my boobs are where they want to stay. They're actually surprisingly nice. And some of my old bras still fit on the open-most hooks.

I had the same thing happen! Same size too. I gave in and got a nursing bra (from Target) because it was suggested in one of the articles I read as a way to save money. I think they are a little roomier because of size fluctuation during nursing? That would be my guess anyway. I will admit it's super comfy.

  • Last time, I just bought cheaper bras as needed at Marshalls or TJ Maxx throughout my pregnancy (I gradually went from a B/C to a DD).

I didn't bother with nursing bras until just before DS was born.  I bought a couple like this for right when I got home from the hospital:  https://www.motherhood.com/Product.asp?Product_Id=97575Z30361&MasterCategory_Id=MC29  And then bought more full coverage bras a week or two later once my milk came in.

  • I would go ahead a buy a quality bra in the size that you need personally. I've already shot up two sizes, but thankfully I kept my bras from my last pregnancy. Because those bras were high quality I can use them again and again as I need them. If you buy each size until you reach your max, then you'll have those bras to go back to when the girls slowly deflate after this pregnancy, and for more pregnancies down the road ;) I feel like my breast do some kind of yo-yo diet throughout this process....it's crazy how much they can change overnight.

  • I waited until the end to buy new bras last time.  I would look around, you may be able to find some that are similar to a sports bra, like a t-shirt bra, that may stretch and give more if you grow some, maybe you will get more use out of those.

it's hard to say, my bra size barely changed, but I did have enough of a change that I went up a cup size when my milk came in after baby was born. Up until then I was able to get away with my usual bras.
  • I had to go up a size around 8-9 weeks last time. I was able to get some from Kohl's that worked. They are down in my maternity clothes tote, waiting for this time. However, if you think you might go up more, go with a cheap "transition" bra from Walmart/Target until you feel like you settle out. I wouldn't spend the money on nursing bras until 3rd tri. Those suckers aren't cheap so, personally, I wouldn't want to wear one during pregnancy, wear it out, and have to buy more for actual nursing.

  • I got some nursing bras from Target and they were about $15 so not that bad.
  • Zulily has nursing bras on sale right now
  • Possibly worth noting -- nursing bras usually have six columns of hooks on the back for greater sizing flexibility, and tend to have some room to 'stretch' in the cups, too. :)
