Frustrated with my medical staff

This afternoon I called my OB because I have been having a lot of cramping and when I wipe after going to the bathroom there is a ton of yellowish brown discharge. And I was told if my normal increased to come in. The OB nurse told me they were closed for the day - I called at 4 pm and to go to acute care.
The intake nurse was really frustrated with me and said none of the staff on call tonight has any OB experience. She has no bedside manners, but still wondering what I am doing here if they cant diagnose.

Re: Frustrated with my medical staff

  • Ugh. If I had legit concerns about my pregnancy and my nurse told me that "no one has any OB experience," I would find a new doctor. I'm confused about where you go? I go to an OB practice so EVERYONE has OB experience. I feel like if they're not available when you need them, how can you trust that they will be there in a true emergency? And also, I know thaat sometimes we pregnant people can overreact or worry too much about symptoms, but I think it's the nurse/doctor's job to make sure everything is okay and reassure us!

They will probably do an ultrasound and maybe a CBC and a quant. They might do a culture too .
I'm surprised they sent you to emergency since you aren't bleeding a lot and didn't have you schedule an office visit for the next day .
    Hopefully it turns out ok

    * on a side note I've been in the same situation and brown discharge is old blood and better than bright red at least
  • I am in acute/emergency care since the Dr's office was closed. I am not so mad at my OB dept except that they could have suggested I observe and come in tomorrow.

I wouldn't be too concerned except it's been a lot of discharge and if I was in late pregnancy I would swear I passed my mucus plug today. The cramps are also more severe than what I've experienced so far and borders my mild contractions with Dd.

  • Oh, I don't see the dr until Monday. I had an intake call with with a nurse yesterday who told me to call if my discharge or cramping got worse. Here I am.

  • Even general practice and ER doctors have to do OB rotations. They may not be specialized in prenatal care but I'd think they should know enough to get an idea of what's going on and relate it to your regular office. I'd be giving the side-eye to your nurse...
Rant over, good luck mama. As PP said, at least it isn't bright red. I hope they can help you enough to get you through the night, at least!
  • I work in the ER of a hospital that doesn't have a labor and delivery, and we get alot of pregnant patients who may or may not know that no one in my hospital has any OB experience, we have no equipment to deal with any kind of pregnancy issue and when we deliver babies it's without monitors, epidural or anything baby related (because we don't have them) and they better pray they don't need a c-section bc we don't have a surgeon 24/7 much less an ob surgeon. I tell everyone who is pregnant that no one has OB experience to scare them into not coming back to our hospital especially if in labor/ delivering. It's scary to me, because unfortunately the only one we can save is mom if it comes down to it. just because our facility is brand new and beautiful doesn't mean it's the best place for a pregnant woman to be....so maybe that's what she meant.
  • Just got done meeting with the doc. We are waiting on the labs. It's a little weird that he is younger than me, and I didn't think 30 was that old! He has been very good.

Now just waiting for those labs to tell me I am crazy and this is all normal.

  • I hope they figure things out and at least do a sono. Anyone can confirm FHR with a sono at this point.. Keep us updated!

Also..... Was he hot?! I totally feel like Rachel on Friends with all the raging pregnancy hormones.

    3 miscarriages - 1 DS (6) - 1 DD (3)  - #3 due March 30!

  • Lol. Not really. He was cute in a nerd way and I totally like that! You could tell he was comfortable talking OB issues.

Everything was ok. I have yet to hear the heartbeat or see the baby. My hcg levels were higher than they should be for 10 weeks and he said "this could be twins or you just have extra hormones". When I called the OB to tell them I had been seen she just laughed and said it was nothing to worry about.

  • Glad things look good!
