40 weeks today and zero dialation. Should I be worried?

After a week of severe cramping and contractions, to my surprise I wasn't dialated at all at my 40 week appt today. I thought for sure I would be. The entire pregnancy I was a high risk for preterm labor (the irony). The doctor already booked an induction for 41 weeks.

Anyone else in this situation on their EDD that ended up going into labor naturally before 41weeks? It just seems kind of impossible at this point.

TIA

I was not dilated at 40 weeks, but I was able to go until 41 + 1. I was also surprised, I'd been having contractions for WEEKS and was so sure I was almost done!

edit to clarify -- baby came on her own at 41+1, I wasn't induced.

  • I'm 40+1 and currently deciding about when to schedule induction since they won't let me go past 41 due to gestational diabetes.  I am 100% closed despite having contractions and cramping as well :(

Ugh I hear ya. At this point I want to meet my son so bad that I can't imagine going another week. And I stopped working last week thinking he would be here by now. X_X
  • I'm 40 weeks tomorrow and as of my last appt not dilated at all. I've had contractions for the last 3 weeks. This pregnancy had been very different than my first two, which makes it that much more difficult to wait.

  • I was 40+1 when baby was born, had no dilation/effacement and cervix was very high (dr was also talking induction) up until I went into labor on my own.
  • 41 weeks today zero dilation or effacement, scheduling induction tomorrow :( feeling discouraged but I'm coming to terms with it
  • I'm 41 weeks today dilated only a fingertip. Praying for patience, and hoping I go into labor spontaneously! I know there's still time and things can change quickly, but it's discouraging not seeing much progress after weeks of contractions. Here's hoping labor begins for many of us still waiting!
  • I'm getting checked today at my 40wk appt, but was not dilated at my last check (37wks). Have only had 2 contractions since then and not a lot of pelvic pressure so I'm guessing still no progress. Eh, it's not like your baby is never going to come out. It will happen eventually, in the meantime take some evening primrose oil, have some sex, and eat some pineapple. Better to induce naturally at this point if they're (the baby) pretty much ready!
  • At my 40w4d appointment I was only 1cm & 0% effaced. I went into labor on my own at 40w6d.. so a lot can change very quickly! I remember thinking I was going to be pregnant forever!

  • Oh yeah, I've been having cramps since like 35 weeks, like almost every night.  Each check they keep saying a fingertip and the dr told me Monday it could be even that I'm not even really dilating yet, just where I've had babies before that's just how my cervix is.  I'm so feeling like I'll be overdue again with this one.

  • And as bad as I want to meet her, I'm refusing an induction until they say I really truly need one.  I'm just hoping she isn't getting too big.  DS 2 was 9lbs 2 oz at 41 weeks 5 days.  I don't feel nearly as big as I did with him, so here's hoping for a normal sized baby.

  • I vaginally birthed a ten pound baby with hardly a tear! Don't worry about the size, your body generally won't make a baby your body can't handle.
  • Things can change quickly. I have been cramping and having contractions since 34 weeks and Braxton hicks since my 2nd trimester. At my check up yesterday at 40w1d and was only 1cm. As disappointing as this is, pre labor is unpredictable. Things can go from nothing to 3cm quickly or slowly. My Doula recently had her own baby 24 hours after her 40 weeks check and she wasn't dialated yet. She says this happens to many woman. Dialation doesn't really give you a good time estimation since it varies from woman to woman. You still have time!

  • For anyone feeling bad about being closed at 38-39 weeks I'm 41+3 and I'm only a little softer, and barely a fingertip dilated! You got time to open up!!
