Baby gives us heart attack!!

3 out of the last 4 days, baby has had these episodes where she wakes up (2 out of 3 occurred when sleeping) and she's unable to breathe! She turns dark red, makes a gagging face and her little eyes bug out of her head like she's scared! She tries to cry, occassionally can get half a scream out but nothing more. It lasts for prob 10-15seconds but feels like a life time!!! Once she gets her breathe, she typically cries and screams for a min or so! Only once has anything come up (like foamy spit). These episodes usually occur about 1.5-2hrs after feeding. Anyone else experience anything like this?!? She has doc appt today for her weigh in so I'm def gonna bring it up!!

What has your baby done that makes your heart stop?!?

Re: Baby gives us heart attack!!

  • Omg! That's awful. I would be a zombie with all the anxiety around these episodes. Poor thing!! My Lo had two choking spells around 2 weeks due to spitting up on her back. I was scared to death and crying.

This is def something to talk to the pediatrician about. Hope it stops!

  • No experience, but how terrifying!! Hoping your ped has some answers for you!
  • OMG no experience but that's terrible. I have a hard time sleeping as it is because I check his breathing 100 times a night. If Declan was doing that I would never sleep!
  • Yikes!!!! Hope pedi has some answers for you!
  • My daughter did this 3-4 times. Turns out it is reflux. Pediatrician confirmed. It was the same timing- approx 1-2 hours after eating, and only at night. This is because during the day, she sleeps sitting up/slouching in a chair, but at night she was flat on back (or side). We have since propped up her mattress with pillows and towels underneath, so that she sleeps at an incline. (As per direction of pedi). This has fixed that scary issue, and hopefully she will grow out of reflux soon. She is currently 3 weeks. She does still get "congestion" in her breathing/throat at night, but no longer has choking episodes on clear, foamy "spit". I also am sure to sit with her upright 20-30 minutes after eating.
  • FYI, use a nasal aspirator to carefully clear some of the mucus out of her mouth, when/if this happens again.
  • I agree that a likely cause could be reflux. Mine did this before and I about passed out... It's really scary. Talking to your pedi is the way to go. Hope it resolves soon!
  • It's terrifying! Leyla has reflux and does this. What I do is after feeding, I keep her upright for a half hour or so to ensure everything stays down. During this she chokes sometimes as well. It's so scary and honestly, I hate feeding my baby because of it because I'm always anxious. Definitely tell the pediatrician. It may or may not be reflux in your case. Praying for a peace of mind for you because I know first hand how awful it is. I'm not sure if you already have, but if you haven't, I would highly suggest a baby cpr class especially if your baby has reflux as they tend to choke a lot. It might give you more of a piece of mind if you know exactly what to do just in case. I say this not to scare, but as a precaution. Good luck!
  • Yikes that would scare me to death and I wouldn't get any sleep after that! Hope the dr. has some advice for you!

She's given me one good scare so far. Right after my milk came in she was nursing middle of the night in our bed and the flow must have been too fast as she started to cough and sputter. I pulled her off my breast and she wasn't breathing, milk coming out of her mouth and nose. I panicked, but thankfully DH kept his cool and helped me change her position and clear her airway.
  • Poor LO!! Let us know what Pedi says.
  • Good lord I would freak out!
Hoping you find some answers and a solution!
  • My son does the same thing. It's his reflux. Poor little guy. :( but I just sit him up as soon as I see any sign of it going to happen and it helps. First time it happened I was healing from my c section and I ripped one of my staples out trying to get to him. Scared me to death!
  • It is reflux. It is called Sandifer Syndrome. My baby has it too. I will be adding rice cereal to her breastmilk and formula and she will be on Prevacid.
  • The pause is so scary! My DS suffers from severe reflux and was having these apnea episodes as well. Suction their nose out when it occurs and keep them upright. Definately talk to your pediatrician about the episodes. DS was in the hospital for further testing, but it is just bad reflux coming back up in bunches. Best of luck!
  • My older daughter did that with reflux as well.
  • Yes, because of this we are going to do a ugi test tomorrow to see if he has reflux, which all shows he does
  • Thx everyone! Doc said it's silent reflux and that she's responding exactly as she should when it occurs. He said to just sit her upright and try to comfort her. Also recommended to keep her upright for a few after eating. He didn't seem overly concerned and made me feel better about it but it's still scary as ever! He said hopefully she'll grow out of it soon!
  • I was going to say reflux

  • Kind of a similar situation with my son. He gets himself so worked up he too turns purple/dark red, and doesn't breath for sometimes up to 8 seconds. it is horrible. Pediatrician saw it happen when he got his 2 month shots and said it should pass as he gets older. My mom told me I used to do the same thing when I was a baby. It is absolutely horrible and so scary. I dread when it happens.
Always hold on to hope ❤

Yes! LO has done this a couple times as well. She'll hold her breathe mid-cry. The reflex thing is different but either way, anytime little one doesn't breathe, it's def upsetting! The reflux thing started once we supplemented with formula which makes it even harder for me to give to her!
