Breastfeeding

Paci's and bottles while Breastfeeding

I was unsuccessful nursing my first born bc of health issues. I am due sept 25th with little girl #2 and plan on breastfeeding. Do you give your little ones paci's while breastfeeding and if so is there a brand better or worse that will mess up the latch? Also when did you introduce the paci?

Re: Paci's and bottles while Breastfeeding

  • Hi there! My LC recommended that we don't use a bottle or a pacifier until our LO was a month old. I had some issues BF'ing the first couple days so we formula fed her in between offering the breast. My dh will give her a bottle occasionally still if I've had a rough night to allow me to sleep more. Honestly my LO doesn't care where the food is coming from as long as it comes. We are using the avent natural bottles. I have their pacifiers also but she hasn't been to interested in those. Hope it all works out for you! GL!

  • We tried to follow the advice to not introduce for a month, but introduced at day 6 and wish I didn't wait so long. Babies have a strong need to suck and she was soothed so much better once we have paci. I have a friend that is a neonatal nurse and she said they see babies all the time that are introduced to paci and once they are able to breastfeed they have no issues going to breast after being on a paci and a tube or bottle for many weeks.
  • We introduced paci's on like, day 3 lol.  Both were able to breastfeed just fine, although that's not to say you should just follow my advice, as every baby is different.

However, I only gave the paci if it was clear that they were tired (in the beginning).   Once my supply was established, I gave the paci at other times.  Their urge to suckle is strong when they are born and it's best for your supply to let them suckle your breast to stimulate milk production.  That's not to say YOU should be the pacifier but that's mainly why it's recommended you should offer the breast first before a pacifier.

Both DDs hated the hospital paci and we've always had success using Nuk pacifiers.  As far as bottles go, we didn't have much success going from breast to bottle with DD1.  She got used to the flow of the bottle and refused the breast at 3 months.  With DD2, we've been using Tommy Tippiee bottles with the 0+ nipples.  If you want to breastfeed/use bottles, keep them on the slowest flow nipple for as long as you want to be able to breastfeed.  Any faster and baby may prefer the bottle to breast because the flow is faster from the bottle than the breast.

    Good luck!
  • When I was in the hospital with DD they took her to the nursery to check her out, take measurements, etc, and asked about whether they could give her a paci. I asked what they thought since they work around it everyday (I had read all about nipple confusion, but wanted their opinion)... She said that it was totally up to me, but babies love to suck on things. So I said if she needed it, go for it. She used it for maybe 5 minutes. Now we're 8 weeks old and take a paci occasionally, but have absolutely no problem breastfeeding. She has EBF since day one. My lactation specialist had me start giving her a bottle by week 3 to have her practicing for when I go back to work. We use tommee tippee closure to nature. We have not had any problem yet, she has Breastmilk from a bottle once a day to practice right now. I was told that because she can smell my milk, she should confuse the nipples. She might get lazy and prefer the bottle because she doesn't have to work as hard...
  • I just had my baby 5 days ago. I had tried reasearching everyhting and it says not to for a few weeks until nursing is established. However I introduced one Saturday morning, 2 days after giving birth. I have also introduced bottles 2 days afterwords as she was so hungry and not getting anything to eat. So far it's been frustrating and I've had to use bottles, but breast-feeding has gotten easier. She went from not latching at all to trying out the bottle at first and then switching to breast feeding. I have had one successful full feeding today and it felt amazing. I know we have along way to go to get it down really good but I don't feel like introducing a pacifier makes it have issues, and it makes her feel better. If it makes her feel better, so be it!

If you do use a bottle and still want to nurse, Modela has bottle nipples that make it where your baby has to suck in order to get anything out. I use those ones when I bottle feed.
  • I breastfeed and pump. A LC told me about paced bottle feeding. It's a way to feed that mimics breastfeeding. Maybe look into that. There is a YouTube video.
  • Ok, so with my first I didn't introduce a pacifier until 5 months because I was totally clueless about bf and had all kinds of road bumps. I wouldn't have even done it except that DD1 would not let me get away after nursing her to sleep. She never took the paci while awake. I tried different kinds and she only liked the mam pacis. I took the paci away as soon as she would let me leave her alone when she fell asleep, about 6.5 months old.

With my second I introduced a paci at about 2ish weeks and almost exclusively for the car seat. But I was confident nursing this time and DD2 had a perfect latch, supply was good (technically I am tandem nursing), and we had to get DD2 in the carseat! I tried drbrowns, mam, and soothie. She only liked soothie.

    Both times no nipple confusion.

  • With my first I tried to stay away from pacifiers just cause that is what was recommended so that way their wouldn't be nipple confusion and such, but once she was born she seemed to just want to suck. So in the hospital I asked for a pacifier and they gave me the Avent Soother and she really took to it.

Now I wish my son would take a pacifier and he didn't want one, go figure.
