How are you dealing with the frustration of m/s?

I know that's kind of a strange question, but my nausea and food aversions are really starting to take a toll on me.  This is my first pregnancy and I hear stories of it letting up after the first trimester and all I can think is....I have six more weeks of this??  I don't think I can handle it.  I didn't think pregnancy would be all rainbows and sunshine, but I didn't think I would have this much trouble dealing with the symptoms.

How is everyone coping?  Obviously this doesn't have to be about m/s and nausea specifically, whatever symptoms are getting you down.

  • I'm not coping very well. I'm over the sick feeling. I know I need to eat but when you're vomiting as much as I have been the last two days it becomes scary to eat knowing half of it will come back up later. I hit a peak in my frustration when I threw up water. So hopefully this lets up soon because like you... I can't do this for 5 more weeks.

I'm so sorry you are feeling badly too.  I feel like such a baby complaining about nausea when it could be worse!  I haven't thrown up but feel like I want to if it would make me feel better.  Have you called your doctor?  I just got off the phone with a nurse who told me to take vitamin B6.  Hopefully that helps.

  • @AnastasiaBeaverhausen09 I called today and was told the same thing. So far breakfast is staying down for me today though.

  • Peppermint hard candies (with real peppermint, not fake) was a life saver for me with DD. I'm trying peppermint oil on the back of my neck this time around but so far, I'm either perfectly fine or super sick all of a sudden. The extremes are starting to get to me. I'm not an extreme person so it's bugging me.

I lost at least 10 lbs first trimester with DD. The first tri is definitely a time to just eat what can stay down and make sure to take your vitamins to make up for the lack of nutrition. For 3 weeks with DD, my lunch consisted of cheese, crackers, dill pickle slices, and a molasses cookie. It's all I could stomach.

Have you heard of sea bands?  I picked some up at Target and have been wearing them for a few hours.  Maybe it's mental, but I just ate some animal crackers without gagging!  I just searched and it looks like they are hit or miss, but for $6 it's worth a shot.

  • Yep. I have those. They helped when I was just nauseous but as things progressed they weren't as helpful.

  • By reminding myself how much worse it could be.
    By sucking on preggie pops.
By following my cravings/what doesn't sound terrible.
By puking when I have to and just...that is what it is.
By trying to stay in bed for as long as possible...cus if I don't get up, it might not start all over again...

  • Taking it day by day. Wake up and immediately put on the sea-bands and sip on ginger ale until I can manage to get down a cracker. When my appetite comes back for a minute I jump all over it in the moment and eat whatever I can possibly get down. It sucks, we all know what you're going through! I keep hearing it gets better after the first trimester. 5 more weeks to go!
  • Thanks ladies.  It helps to know other people can relate.

  • I feel the same way. I dread getting out of bed in the morning because there is a 75% I will dry heave or puke. Luckily that only happens first thing in the morning and then I just feel awful the rest of the day. I hate it and I hate whining about it.

  • I'm too early for m/s but anticipate it to hit around the 6 week mark as it did with my last pregnancy.  However, the insomnia has set in and lower back pain intermittently.

  • Hello all! I haven't posted before but I had to do a search for this very topic as I'm really struggling too! This is my first pregnancy and I'm 7 weeks now. I'm wondering how other people are managing at work with the nausea and sickness? I've managed okay until today when I had to leave a couple of hours early as I just felt awful. I seem to have taken a turn for the worse today
  • Similar to @saladflambe I'm counting my blessings, eating what I can stomach, and vomiting when I need to, then going back about my day.I picked up a Quease-ease stick which helps a bit, but mostly lemon-water helps and just keeping busy/convincing myself that feeling nauseated with headaches isn't too bad and isn't permanent. Oh, and not bending straight over or wearing things with snug waistbands has helped me manage too.
I was afraid I was going to lose it a few days ago when DS had a virus and was vomiting...cleaning it up when you feel like you need to do it yourself is not so great. I just kept convincing myself it was only messed up food. : /

I have a foster cat with tummy troubles.
I have cleaned up so. much. vomit. I literally caught it in a piece of paper mid-air this AM to avoid cleaning it up. I'm so over vomit right now. Also, the smell of cat food makes me nauseated.

  • For the last 2.5 weeks I've been nauseous and throwing up daily. I tried everything...ginger ale, saltines, small meals, preggie pops, hard candies, sea bands, b6/unisom. I was throwing up 8+ times a day. I broke down one night to my husband crying b/c I felt so bad. Went to the dr b/c I was afraid I was going to get dehydrated. Got Zofran which helped a bit. Working and throwing up all day was no fun. Still wish I felt 100% but I'll take the little relief I've received.
  • I have a mantra I say whenever I throw up: "you need to go through this to meet your baby".
    That and dicligis!!

Yes, at this level, medical intervention is needed. I hope you feel better soon :(

  • Zofran, dicligis, extra B6, and Zantac. I've discovered that taking a zofran and zantac about an hour before getting out of bed makes the mornings a bit better. I'm eating whatever looks good. I blew the grocery budget for the month by going to Whole Foods and getting several of their pre-made food options and I eat a bite here and there.

Crackers, sea bands, ginger, peppermint- none of that worked for me. It really depends on the person.

Next time you are at your clinic, ask the nurse if you can take home a couple of their emesis bags. I keep them in the side pocket of the drivers door for those *I'm stuck driving, can't pull over, and I'm puking now* moments. Keep paper towels and bottled water in the car too.

  • Started taking diclectin today (diclegis if you're from the states)....missed a day of work from the drowsiness but nausea has settled a lot. I feel like I might actually be able to function now. Planning to only take it at night if I can't battle the drowsiness during the day. Have some Zofran too for daytime if I need. Nausea was seriously limiting my ability to function at work!
  • Thanks for that ayeshaohara. Not that I want anyone else to struggle at work too but it's nice to know I'm not the only one. It sometimes seems that everyone else can manage (although I know that's probably not completely true) and I feel really pathetic that I find it hard. I have an hour to drive each way to work and I have visits and face to face appointments with patients all day so it's quite demanding particularly when you have to be 'on the ball' because of the nature of the work! I will try the suggestions above though and see if they help!

I just want to tell you not to feel pathetic.  I am also talking to myself here, because I also feel pathetic, especially when I know others have it way worse.  What you're going through sucks no matter the severity.  You've never felt this way before, and it can take a toll on you mentally.  We will get through this!

  • I've been managing with trying to eat small meals throughout the day, my ginger candy, sleep (when I can), and switching taking my vitamin to before bed instead of during the day. It's seemed to help a little bit, but I still always feel constantly quesy and it sucks. My step sister had HG with both of her kids so I know it could be so much worse, but I don't do well with sick/nauseous - never have. It's certainly not helping with my concentration at work... So I really hope it goes away soon.
  • Thank you AnastasiaBeaverhausen09. You are right - we will all get through it! Just need to hang on for the second trimester when it apparently eases off. Here's hoping!
  • I'm 6 weeks tomorrow, so not in prime m/s time yet. So far this week I've had very mild symptoms - ranging from feeling like my stomach is unsettled to feeling like I might throw up. It hasn't been too persistent, and the only day I had trouble eating was yesterday.

That said, here's what I'm doing to try and keep it mild and tolerate it when it gets worse....
    1. Drinking lots of water. Some theories say that m/s is complicated by dehydration - no idea how valid it is, but drinking water is usually a good thing, so why not! This is hard to dig out of though, because if I'm already dehydrated and feeling sick, drinking a ton of water is just NOT possible. So I try to stay ahead of it....I keep a glass of water next to my bed to drink before I get up, and try to drink about least 40oz by lunch.
    2. Mint tea has worked well for me! Sipping on it helps settle my stomach, or if I don't feel like I can drink anything just smelling it helps too.
    3. Remind myself that symptoms are a good thing....especially this early in pregnancy it reassures me that everything's progressing!
  • I reached my breaking point last night and spent and hour bawling my eyes out to my husband.. Didn't take away the nausea but he made me feel better and babied me a little... My 18 month old DD gave me hugs and kisses and reminded me how worth it this all is in the end.
  • I think I am reaching my point of m/s disappearing.... or slowly disappearing.  I am 8w3d and today is the first day I actually do not feel extremely nauseous.  I woke up with a slight stomach ache (although I still have yet to throw up) and the car ride to work was horrible but as soon as I started eating, my stomach stopped hurting.  It seems to only bother me every 2-3 hours when I need food.  Hopefully, I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of the m/s journey!!!

For the past 3 weeks, my diet consisted of Jolly Ranchers, Jell-o, plain pasta, toast, soup, and crackers.  Today, it felt so nice to actually eat normal food!  If I can eat mac and cheese and not have nausea, that's a win in my book!

  • @baybeekay - this gives me hope, too! I'm only a couple days behind you. I would love to think that the worst of the nausea is behind me.
  • Yes! This is where I'm at now. Strong aversions to food just led me to follow whatever craving I had so I could eat something.
  • I just feel so much better reading all these posts. This is a stressful time. I. Used to being active and healthy and feel super guilty and pathetic since I'm not being myself right now. We have a tendency to be super hard on ourselves as women, and no matter how many times DH reminds me this is temp. I still can't imagine feeling this way for close to another month. Were all awesome, and deserve all the credit in the world. Were growing a life, what's more important than that?!

No, seriously. I did that the other night. I'm sick from 6am-11am and then 3pm-11pm.

    Empathizing with all of you!

Crying to DH helped made me feel better too, didnt take away my symptoms but was comforting nontheless.
  • Went and got a salad for lunch and I noticed they threw a few of those peppermint disk candies in my bag. I tried one just for kicks bc I heard peppermint can help.

Honestly I'm so happy I got those bc they're helping so much better than anything else I've tried, including my ginger candy. I feel like it's settled a little bit of my indigestion as well which is probably a contributing factor. Just wanted to throw this out there in case any one else wanted to give it a go.
