Belly Button Piercing

My belly ring is out and has been out for about a year now but I had it pierce for about six years before it got taken out so it will never heal and I can still put jewelry through it (I don't though). As I've gotten bigger redness around my piercing is getting worse and worse. Plus there is alot of tenderness around it also. Is anyone else having problems with this? Can it rip through? Should I be worried ?

Re: Belly Button Piercing

  • I had my belly button pierced since I was 18 (24 now) but I took it out after I had my third baby. It actually closed though. I'm pregnant with my fourth and it gets red occasionally. Your skin is stretching. The skin right there commonly does stretch, you can get stretch marks but I wouldn't worry about it tearing. I personally have never known or heard of this happening. The skin is just thin right there. Maybe just rub some lotion in the area or oils.

  • I agree with PP. My belly button ring has been irritated lately as well, but I just take the ring out for a couple days and it clears up. If the irritation is especially bothersome, I would just clean it like a new piercing until it heals. Stretching is to be expected in that area, so keeping it clean will probably help the tenderness.

  • I took mine out for both my previous pregnancy and this one.  It went right back in after I delivered, but while my belly is growing it is super stretched out and looks pretty gross.  Unless it's really painful you're probably okay!

  • I don't have jewelry in and haven't for over a year, it's the piercing getting bothered...

I didn't get a piercing but I have a scar in my belly button from laproscopic surgery. We'll it used to be inside my belly button now it's folded out and is stretching a good bit. It's often itchy and red and def bigger. Just way it is with scars as the skin is straining. I just try to keep the area lubricated with lotion and coconut oil and it helps a lot.
  • I had this problem and went to a piercer to ask her. She said just remove it for the rest of your pregnancy. It's getting irritated because of tightening of the skin. Run piercing through hole once a week if you want to keep. I did this in shower with soap to help with no irritation of skin. After baby, put back in, no problems.
  • It may just be that the scar tissue of the piecing is not as elastic as the rest of your skin, I'm finding this with both my piercing area (fully healed 12 year old piercing) and my 2.5 year old laperocopy scars. They hurt/inch a little and the red/inflamed. I'd say unless it becomes extreemly uncomfortable or starts weeping or something it a normal result of the stretching your skin is doing.
  • Mine doesn't get red but I get almost a pinching/burning sensation sometimes. Then I itch for like a half hour. I just assume it's my skin. My whole stomach feels tight and stretched to the max right now.
Lotion or a warm shower usually helps with my problems.
