Breast Feeding Question-snacking?

I am a FTM and the first in my family to breast feed. I am wondering. Do babies sometimes snack? I fed DD at 12:55 and it was around 2 so a little over an hour and she was acting hungry so I fed her and she was only on one side for not even 10 min and is now napping. Just curious!

Thanks!

Re: Breast Feeding Question-snacking?

  • Ok so my 8 day old will act hungry then only feed for like 5 min on the breast then pass out! Other posters told me to wake her little butt up and make her continue feeding, it's hard tho, she is dead to the world sometimes!

  • My son does the same thing. Last night he ate for 30 minutes, got changed and was almost out, then was screaming and hungry. Ate for about 10 minutes and slept perfectly after!
  • Okay thanks. I wasn't sure if this what they called cluster feeding or what! I'll try and keep her up!!
  • Sometimes when they do this, they may also just have a stuck burp upsetting their tummy and they want to suck for comfort.  Not always, but just putting it out there as a possibility.

  • Mine does this a lot. He's usually gassy, lol, and once he lets out a good fart or burp he's back at it! But he has also been known to eat on one side for about 5-10 min, doze off, then eat on the other side 45 min-1 hour later for a little bit longer.

  • Yes it's normal. They may want extra comfort or to be "topped off" or even just thirsty.

  • My pediatrician explained that like us, sometimes we want a full meal other times we just want a snack. Perfectly normal!
  • Yup very normal, my midwife said it's perfectly okay and could mean they are going through a growth period!
