Do you feel like a mom yet?

This is my first pregnancy and I was always told you feel like a mom as soon as you are pregnant. I do NOT feel like a mom. I just feel sick. Anyone else?

Re: Do you feel like a mom yet?

  • I don't know that I would say I feel like a mom, but I do feel protective of LO. Always praying he (saying he as I just have a feeling it's a boy) is safe and healthy.

  • I agree. I don't feel like a mom...just very paranoid of everything that comes within a 3 feet radius of my stomach.
  • Maybe not necessarily a mom but super protective, however something came up in a car ride the other day and DH said I was a mom. It made me all super emotional and happy at the same time. :)
  • I don't feel like a mom.
I feel kinda like a monster.
    Or alien.

  • Second time mom here...Mostly my whole pregnancy I just felt like a whale. I didn't feel like a mom until I held DD in my arms. After that...there was no looking back.
  • I do! But that's because I already have a daughter ;). I definitely didn't feel like a mom until like 5 months AFTER my daughter was born. But I do remember feeling protective, as others have mentioned.
  • I remember feeling mostly protective, sick, and more assertive when I first got pregnant with DS. I didn't feel more like a mom until I could feel him kicking and reacting to things I did/ate/said. An entirely new level of motherhood hit like a thunderbolt when I held him. This time, I'm trying to talk to little peanut and sing to him/her in the evenings after DS goes to bed because honestly, while DS is awake, my focus is on him.
  • I definitely don't feel like a mom. I don't think I'll really be one until my little one is born!
  • I really didn't start feeling like a mom until I felt kicking. Not only is it the best feeling ever, but it makes everything REAL at that point. The baby is saying hi in its own way and just to me. :-) Can't wait for that again.

  • Definitely don't feel like a mom. I feel like a I have a medical condition that requires me to be careful of certain things.

I am definitely excited and happy, but it doesn't feel real yet.

  • I don't feel like a mom yet, but I am starting to be protective. I fell the other day on my hands and knees at McDonald's (they had wiped the floors down), and didn't freak out until I stood up. The doctor said everything was fine but did ask me to stay on my feet LOL. Since then, I've been a lot more cautious.
  • I don't feel like a mom yet either. Maybe after seeing the first ultrasound it will really hit me? It's kicking in for DH. I got some n/a wine at the store and came back from grabbing another item to hear him tell the cashier (who was asking for ID) that it's "n/a for my pregnant wife"
  • I don't know if I really felt like a mom with DS until we were home for a few days.

I do remember feeling very distinctly different after I could start feeling him kick, though.  Way more connected.

  • With my first pregnancy, I sort of felt like a Mom when the baby started to move, and kick. It was the best feeling ever. Definitely not this early in the pregnancy though.

I didn't really feel like a Mom until DD was in my arms, when I heard her cry for the first time, I looked into her little eyes...then I felt like a Mom.

I don't feel like one yet because I'm so nervous something is going to happen allll the time. This is my first time so I think it is difficult imagining yourself in a situation that you have never been in before ...but I've never been so happy and my husband is AMAZING he is so excited
  • Oh I feel so much better everyone! I keep thinking of some saying I heard: "women are mothers when they get pregnant, men become fathers when they see their baby the first time." Well I don't believe it! I definitely just feel sick. Not like there's a baby in there. Hopefully once I feel kicks!
  • Do I feel like a mom?  That would be a no.  Do I feel like Sweet Dee on It's Always Sunny trying to do stand up comedy?  Yes.

To this saying: many men don't feel like fathers the moment they see the baby. MH is the greatest father and had the unique experience of being there for first diaper change and bath in the hospital while I was gorked out. But in general, most fathers I talked to said they didn't really feel like fathers until they cared for the newborn completely on their own, whether for an hour or a whole day. And it took me a couple of days before I started referring to myself as "Renzo's mom". Best feeling ever, though!
