5 week ultrasound

I had my first ultrasound today, 5weeks 2 days along. They said it is early (they should've scheduled it for next week) and there was no heart beat. I go back in 3 weeks for another ultrasound.
Has anyone experienced this? This is our 4th baby, and all my other ultrasounds were done around 5 weeks, no problem.

Re: 5 week ultrasound

  • Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the heart begins beating sometime in the 5th week. I know it's hard not to, but try not to worry.

  • The heart beat develops between 5-6 weeks. I wouldn't be alarmed yet. Easier said then done, I know, but it should definitely be there next u/s. I can't wait to have my first one! Do OBs typically do one at the first visit? I will be 6 weeks.
  • @kmd0501 I think every doctor is different - mine sometimes will/sometimes won't. I won't be seeing him until I'm 7.5 weeks though, so I will be a little peeved if I don't at least get a doppler.
  • With my last pregnancy I had an ultrasound around 5 weeks because of spotting and there wasn't a heartbeat and he was totally fine. I think it's pretty common to not be able to see/hear the heartbeat that early.

@kmd0501 my old OB didn't do ultrasounds typically until between 9 and 12 weeks so not at the first appt. My new one does it at my first appt at 7 weeks so I think it really depends.

@mrstmoose I have to wait that long too which sucks! I feel like I won't be convinced I'm pregnant until I go. I don't think they'll do a Doppler that early though, I don't know if it would be able to pick up the heartbeat at that point? I may be wrong about that though.

Hi everyone. I just found out Friday that I am pregnant with our first! I am a little over 5 weeks. I have my first ultrasound next Friday 10/2. I'm excited but still anxious until i can get the sono to confirm it all. We've been trying a long time and finally after only my 2nd round of fertility meds, it happened!
  • It's hard to hear heartbeats with the dopper eariler then 12 wks. But it's easily heard on the ultrasound machine around the 6 mark. :)
  • It's normal to not see the heartbeat until 6 weeks. Try not to worry!
  • @Bookhousegirl I honestly have no idea what the difference is between a doppler vs. ultrasound. Either way, I don't think we get to see/hear the heartbeat at our first appointment...which is dumb!
  • @mrstmoose a Doppler is kind of like an ultrasound machine but without the video, so it's only external and they run it over your belly to find the heartbeat. It's hard to find it this way when you're early on because the baby is still so little and buried in your pelvis, but at a certain point they start doing it at every appt to make sure everything is good with the heart rate. An ultrasound can be internal (which it usually is this early because it can pick up more that way) or external and has the video/pictures.

Not that you asked for an explanation, but just so you know what you can expect!

I had to wait a while last time too and it was pretty anxiety inducing. Fx that you'll get to hear/see something at your appt!

I bought a Doppler for home with my first and I did hear a heartbeat on it around 8-9 weeks :)

  • @Bookhousegirl thanks! I wanted an explanation! I might beg my doctor to have an ultrasound. I have anxiety and the thought of not seeing anything until 12 weeks causes me to panic!
  • At my old practice we didn't get an ultrasound until our 12 week NT scan. I was so jealous of all the people on my BMB who got early ultrasounds! At my new practice they do one at the first appt. I can't wait!!

  • 5 week ultrasounds vary greatly from patient to patient. Sometimes I can see the "diamond ring sign" with or without the heart beating. But sometimes all I can see is the yolk sac. Both are completely normal for 5 weeks. This is why I prefer patients to wait till 7-8 weeks for their 1st ultrasound. Waiting is hard but I think the anxiety of not seeing anything is worse on the patient.

Thank you for this. Even the pictures in the ultrasound thread seem to vary greatly even when they are similar time frames along. I went in last week, and I was about 7 weeks from my LMP. However, I have anywhere from 35-45 day periods, so I know I probably ovulated late. My ultrasound showed a diamond ring which my doctor said concerned him because I looked only 4-5 weeks. I went into a panic, and spent the entire weekend stressed out which I imagine can't be good for anything. I go back on Thursday to see if it grew any, but looking at pictures online of ultrasounds looks reassuring, and I can't find any 4 week ultrasounds that have the diamond ring only. I have no idea why he decided that was the best time to give me the miscarriage speech rather than wait until this week and seeing if it actually grew. I could have done without the extra stress, but fortunately I'm in better spirits now with the waiting game.
