I'm getting sick, any suggestions?

Hi all of my soon to be mommies! This is my first post and I have a couple of questions. I'm getting cold symptoms and I was just curious if cough drops were okay to have? I haven't had my first appointment so I haven't been able to ask my doctor yet. And if you have any other safe remedies pass them along please :)

Re: I'm getting sick, any suggestions?

  • Orange juice, rest and lots of fluids? I don't do meds well so this typically works. Its not a speedy thing but the more fluids and sleep I do the shorter the cold is.

  • I also don't do any kind of meds when I'm sick or in pain. When I have colds during preg I just pack my smoothies with tons of greens and vitamin c. Plenty of liquids and rest. Ginger onions and garlic and white veggies are great immune boosters
  • Depending on where you're at this could also be allergies, if you haven't been in the area for a year or two. I'm in Texas and this is a bad time of year for allergens; people are always coming into the clinic where I work thinking they have a cold but it really depends on your symptoms. Cough drops should be fine, hopefully the doc can suggest something to help you out!
  • According to my Human Diseases professor, the average cold runs for 10 days and increasing Vitamin C (OJ) can possibly reduce it to 8. Unfortunately colds are a virus that just have to run their course. Staying hydrated and getting. Lots of rest are the best things you can do for yourself. As far as symptom management, I'm pretty sure cough drops are fair game, but they do have recommended doses (I think it's one an hour+) so I would be sure to pay attention to that. I also like eucalyptus oil as aromatherapy in the shower to help with congestion, but i don't know if any research has been done on EO use and pregnancy.

I'm in the same boat. Symptoms started today. I don't take any meds unless it becomes absolutely necessary for a sinus or respiratory infection. I try all natural remedies first. I gargle with warm salt water, I chop up a garlic clove and swallow, I drink hot water with lots of lemon, tbsp of apple cider vinegar and honey. I also use the Neti pot or the saline nasal irrigator. Hope you feel better soon!
  • I have asthma so I have to be very careful when I get a cold. This last time I finally broke down and called my ob to see what I could take. They said okay to Clairitin for allergies. And Tylenol cold and throat drops for cold. I also drank ginger tea. I'd still recommend calling your ob and see what they recommend you take. :)
