Constipation

I started taking Zofran (anti nausea) this past week and it's been great to finally have an appetite/keep foods down, however now I am so constipated. I have the worst stomach ache and need advice how to beat this. I started taking stool softeners today but no help so far.

Re: Constipation

  • It takes a while for the stool softeners to have an effect. It should be better in the next couple of days. If not, maybe you should call your OB.

  • Lurking from March.. But I had the worst constipation ever weeks 7-9!! I just recently had it again at week 14. I use Miralax and it tends to help but it's definitely not instant. I was so desperate last week I took some then ate an entire can of beans hahaha
  • Increase water and fiber - my ob recommended Colace. I've been eating Fiber One bars and Raisin Bran and it seems to help for now.

  • I feel your pain! The first week I took zofran every 8 hours. The constipation is caused was unreal! The nurse said it causes constipation but I call bs. It causes you not to go...at....all!! At least for me. I went a week without being able to go, and my stomach hurt so bad. I tried everything under the sun, prune juice, cranberry juice, apple juice, increased fruit, colace....all that did was cause unbearable cramps and gas. I finally had to resort to fleet enemas for relief. I used an enema 3 times in the span of a week and a half. It was the only way I could go. I stopped taking zofran as often, only took it when nausea was getting really bad. I went 3 days without it and finally was able to use the bathroom normally. That stuff is the devil! Good for nausea and vomiting, but Idk what was worse, throwing up or not being able to go! Good luck!!
  • Try 2 kiwis a day. Kiwis act as a natural stool softener. Works like a charm for me.
  • I could've written this myself. The constipation is awful with Zofran. I'm taking 1-2 colace and benefited daily, but I'm not really getting anywhere. Im tempted to take a break from the Zofran, but I know I'll throw up like crazy.
  • I eat a fiber 1 bar daily, if I don't I pay for it. :( lots of water and fiber!
  • Nothing but Milk of Magnesia (Phillips) worked for me. Start with 2-3 tablespoons on an empty stomach in the morning. I do it once a week to clear things out. Doc said it was totally safe.

  • I hadn't heard of kiwis helping with constipation I gotta try that ! I'm eating prunes like crazy and it's not helping much . My prenatal had a stool softener in it but it's not even close to enough. Anybody have success with prune juice ? I'm about to head to the store and I really wanna stick with a natural alternative .
  • Dried apricots have worked really well for me. I've also been putting extra wheat bran in my smoothies!
  • About twice a day drink hot lemon water (like you would tea) with a lot of lemon. Not kidding, this worked for me almost instantly.
  • Eat some Taco Bell.
  • Eat some Taco Bell.

Oh man DON'T do this...I know we probably all have Taco Hell stories from binging at 1 AM in college (or was that just me?)but I made this mistake a few weeks ago after being constipated for DAYS and oh my word the agony...
  • Taco Bell isn't real food lol blahhhh :-&
  • You've got to take a stool softener with the Zofran and then another at night. It's the only thing that works for me. At this point, you may be too stopped up/impacted and may need a suppository. It's not pretty, but it's effective.
  • I've been pounding prunes for a week and it's definitely helping! Trader Joe's has some really nice ones.
