Bath Time

My daughter is now 6 weeks old and she absolutely hates bath time. As soon as she gets in the water she completely freaks out and doesn't stop crying until the bath is over. We have tried making the water warmer and cooler. We have tried doing bath time right after feedings. We have tried toys. We have tried a pacifier. We have tried all kinds of soothing techniques. Nothing is working. What is going on with this? Everyone I know with newborns just keeps telling me how much their baby loves bath time. I just need to know if anyone else is having this problem.

Re: Bath Time

  • I'm not having this problem currently BUT I'd guess that, like any person, some babies like water more than others. When LO was younger she didn't like bath time bc she got cold. As soon as her umbilical cord fell off and she could be more in the water we put one wet cloth over her belly and periodically use a cup or the other cloth to pour warm water on it. That did the trick to keep her warm and bath time is fun now!

  • Mine loves bath time. But the other day we put more water in thinking she would like to have her legs and belly in the water and she cried the whole time. I think the floating sensation scared her. If you have a lot of water in maybe try less water? Just a thought.
  • Mine didn't like it too much until we bought a Blooming Bath. I think he didn't like sliding around on the hard plastic infant tub. Now we put the Blooming Bath inside the infant tub and he likes it. Not like huge smiles but no crying for sure. Also the BB keeps the warm water in whereas it just drained out of the plastic tub.
  • Mine hated bathes at first. Not I wouldn't say he loves them, but he doesn't cry the entire time either. I think he just got used to them. I just keep a warm washcloth on him and talk to him the whole time. Maybe try feeding right after a bath so she starts to realize she gets a 'treat' after bath time?
  • My lo loves her bath but my nephew hated it. Honestly if I remember correctly he just eventually got over it..now he's a year and a half and he hates getting out of the tub.

Yes! This is what we do and our LO loves bath time.
  • Mine does not like bath time. She used to scream the whole time and then for a while afterwards, too. I think she just eventually got over it, but it's not her favorite thing. Now, she just kinda stares at me and looks confused. She will start crying when she's out of the tub when I'm drying her off and changing her diaper and jammies. I think it's because she's cold. She's 10 weeks.

The only thing I did different was change the soap from Aveeno Baby to J&J in the purple bottle. Not sure if that made a difference...

I think it just takes time... your LO will eventually tolerate bath time, if not love it.
  • My LO loves the bath time but I have noticed I have to submerged most her body. I hold her head up and she loves it but when we just tryto use the sprayer that came with tub she gets upset. Maybe your LO wants to be deeper or a little more covered with the water???
  • LO likes bath time but DS did not. It just took time, I don't remember exactly when he started enjoying it but I know for sure by 1 and now at 4 he loves baths. The other night he said to me "I guess when I'm a grown up I have to take showers". I said no, some grown ups take baths and he very happily said "oh yay then I will always take baths even when I'm really really tall!" Lol.
  • I wrap him in a Muslim blanket and pour warm water on it to keep him warm while in the water then just unwrap one body part at a time to wash. It works pretty well for us plus I think the weight of the wet blanket Makes him feel a little more secure. He's good with the bath it's the putting lotion and clean clothes on that he gets mad at. He hates changing clothes.
  • Bath time has been great until last night... I didnt put the little cushion in and bathed LO in the hard plastic and as soon as i set him down, he let out the weirdest scream but eventually calmed down.
  • My LO didn't like a bath unless I took one with her- just let her lay on my chest. She was so comforted by it she would fall asleep. Now that she's 10 weeks I haven't taken a bath with her for awhile, or unless she's really fussy, but we make sure the bathroom is heated up so she doesn't get too cold when she gets out. She loves the heater so much she lays on the towel in front of it and just stares up at the ceiling and cries when we turn it off!
  • This is why I love this group of ladies! We just had our first non-crying bath time! We used a little baby tub and packed it with towels and then wrapped one of the towels around her and just washed one part at a time. There was actually a point in time that she was smiling at us! Thank you for all of your suggestions!!!
  • Sometimes the tub can make all the difference. We have the whale tub. Love that thing. Also I keep a washcloth on her tummy to keep her warm and pour water over the cloth to keep it warm. And singing songs helps us too. Our fav is miss Lucy had a baby.
