Just curious if they are a waste ? I got a lot during my baby shower and I opened a pack and I was like wow they are so tiny! Lol. It's been 6+ yrs since my last and I cannot remember if we used them and for how long.
I have no idea either. I was given some by a friend who had a baby earlier this year, but her baby was tiny at birth and I don't think my kid is going to be small. I'd say don't open them all and see if you can return them or exchange them for different sizes.
I wouldn't open up more than one package, just in case, but the newborn diapers have a nice feature that they have a cutout for baby's cord stump. Baby might not be in that size more than a week or so, and you can exchange anything unopened for size 1. My son was in NB for a few weeks if that.
Totally depends on your LO's size. My first was 7lbs 2 oz. I took A LOT of nb size diapers from the hospital so probably only used 1 box of my own. They have the cut out in the front so are nice until the belly button tie falls off if they fit!

For reference. DS2 was 3 weeks early 6 lb 5 oz and only wore newborn for about 2 weeks. He is a big eater and is growing really quickly but newborns were snug at 2 weeks and didn't fit anymore at all by 3 weeks. I think its probably a good idea to have them since diapers that are too big can be a pain with the umbilical cord stump but I would just buy a small pack rather than a box.
I second not opening any more. My son was in size 1s at the hospital (10# 14oz). I have 122 nb size for my twins since I expect them to be quite a bit smaller.
It all depends on the size of your babe. My daughter was in newborn for about a month, and you go through about 8-10 diapers a day. I'm sure you could exchange them for a bigger size when needed.

This. DD was 6 lbs 6 ozs and she wore newborns for nearly a month. And the stump cutout is nice. You never know. I wouldn't open more than one package though. There's really no point.
If I recall 9 yrs ago with first child...he peed through some diapers but I don't remember if those were newborn. Not gonna open anymore I just opened that one pack and when I saw then I was like wow lol tiny! My other 2 were 7lbs 7oz and this baby seems to weigh more. So I think that one pack I opened will last no more then a month.
From what I've read NB size is supposed to work until baby is 10lbs. I'm a FTM so no clue if this is accurate, I have a small pack opened but I won't open the big one until I know if I need it. My doctor keeps telling me baby is "average" size, whatever that means!
My babies are usually around 6.5 lb and we wore newborn diapers for quite awhile. Just don't open them all and see how it goes. Just remember, newborns go through a ton of diapers a day so you may use more than you think.

FTM here, but I opened one pack to put some into the diaper caddy and whatnot. I'm leaving the rest in case I don't end up using them because if you can figure out where they came from you can usually exchange for another size.
Anything I don't need that's opened, I'll donate or see if anyone else I know needs some.
How many packs do you recommend, if you are starting at...0? I'm just going to buy a couple hundred (2 large packs) and hope that is enough? Or I can buy at Target and return them (they are AWESOME about returns if you use your redcard!)
Our hospital doesn't even use NB diapers, I didn't use them for either of my boys, even though my little guy was only 6lb7oz...size 1 worked for him. I wouldn't bother, I always found it a hassle to exchange stuff like that, even though it's doable if necessary.

I got a bunch of NB sized diapers at my shower. I just opened one pack - not sure I'm going to need the super sized box of 88 NB diapers from costco...
@MrsL32 really? Thats good to know...I bought a big box of size 1 at costco, since they didn't have newborn size...much less than newborn size at other stores. Maybe I'll give them a shot.

Cloth diapering after newborn phase....
We are cloth diapering after NB phase and only bought 3 packs of 40 NB dipes to last the first 12-14 days....then we will re-assess. And yes you can return or exchange diapers!
It sounds like my husband and I have way too many newborn diapers! We are FTP and we have been guessing on what we need for a lot of things lol. We have 5 boxes of newborn size diapers that we have gotten from baby showers and purchases! Hopefully we can return some of them... because it does sound like we will need to!
We received two boxes of newborn diapers. One was written on so I couldn't return it. I intended to open that one, but opened the one I was going to take back. I have no idea how many we'll use, but I have a friend who's due 3 weeks after me so I told her not to buy any. We'll donate whatever is left.
We used NB diapers for quite a while with DD. She was 7lbs 15oz at birth but was long and skinny.m and didn't gain weight quickly. Right now we have a big box and we will probably just use that and be done with it hopefully. Even if we need some more, I probably won't buy but a small bag of we need more.
This is all so good to know! We haven't bought any, but have 66 (each birth/nursing/care class gave us a free pack of 22) new born ones. Maybe we'll just buy a smaller box and wait and see if we need more.
I always used new born diapers for the first month. My babies all weighed between 6.4 and 8.1lbs. You go through a lot diapers the first few weeks. Around 8-10 per day. They go pretty fast. Buy what you want but only open box at a time.
I was gifted 7 boxes of newborn diapers from both of my baby showers. I've been assured I'll use them all, but I'm only opening one package at a time. You can always exchange them for a different size later.
I would say yes, to have just in case. With my DD, although she was 8lbs at birth, size 1 was too big, and she stayed in NB until she was about 1 month old. If you figure 8-10 diapers a day for 30 days, a couple packs wouldn't hurt. I also echo to not open more than one pack at a time though, in the event you need to exchange. In my experience, I haven't had any problems with exchanging diapers, just the hassle of going to the store and doing it.
Just curious to the PP saying they plan on returning unopened boxes of diapers.....do you keep receipts? Do you even return to the same store? When I have received diapers as gifts, they did not come with a receipt and I dont know where they were purchase...
Usually big chain stores will take them back and let you exchange for a different size. Walmart does it all the time. Just tell them it was a gift and that you need to exchange for a different size.
