3rd Trimester

scared I will miss my waters breaking

I'm 40 weeks today and for a few days I go for a wee, wipe, leave the bathroom and suddenly I'm wet again! I don't feel anything at all, just realise there is a wet patch. Is it my bladder being useless or are my waters leaking? It only happens after going to the toilet so I suspect it's wee but it's strange not to feel any muscles contracting or anything, as when I sit down to pee it feels like normal. My mucas plug has been appearing a bit at a time for 2 days and I've been having (non regular) contractions for 2 weeks but my midwife tried to do a sweep 2 days ago (which prompted the appearance of the Mucas plug I think) and said my cervix was too high and it would be about another week yet. I know it's dangerous if your waters break too long before you go into labour so I'm panicking a bit!

Re: scared I will miss my waters breaking

  • What happens if you sit for a while, not on the toilet, and then stand up?
My water broke by "springing a leak" rather than gushing everywhere. For a while it only trickled out when I changed position (sitting or lying down to standing up).
Labor ramped up shortly afterward, so feel free to hang out a while. It wasn't long until I knew for sure it was my water.

  • There was no missing mine when it broke with my first DD. I gushed and gushed for hours and left a snail trail... Soaked 2 towels, my bed, several pairs of pants and pads and eventually a #5 diaper before it stopped. If you're concerned, and this sounds gross but smell the liquid. amniotic fluid smells sweet. And also my MW told me that only 10% of women have their water break on its own so maybe that helps a bit?
  • Just a heads up, not everybody's water will break, and some won't break until they have already started actively laboring.
  • My water breaking was more like big trickles with my first. I was 34 weeks and didn't feel my contractions at all. Since it was so early, I didn't think much of it and waited until the next day to call the dr and was sent to l&d. My baby was delivered via emergency c about 30 mins after I got there due to low fluid levels which possibly caused a placental abruption and baby's heart rate dropped.

I'm going to have to suggest you call your doctor. Let them decide if it's normal or they want to see you. You are 40 weeks so it could be water broke...You never know. Good luck!
