Baby positioning

Today at my check up I asked my doctor to feel if Ainsley was head down and she is! What are the chances she will stay this way? I'll be 30 weeks Thursday. Do they often flip back and forth or what? She acted like she might not stay like this and now I'm concerned again. Has anyone else been checked if your baby is breech or not?

Re: Baby positioning

  • Every time I've had am ultrasound, baby has been in birth position. It is possible they will move, but as they grow it's less likely. I'll be 30 weeks Sunday, so I am in the same boat as you hoping my daughter doesn't flip around! Fingers crossed.

  • My ob says he doesn't get concerned until a week or two before the due date. Baby can move and wiggle until then.

I looked briefly at a couple different places. This one is the only one that gave specifics: Baby usually turns head down at 30 weeks, but may do it at 34 weeks or even by 36 weeks. Only concern is if they don't do it by 36 weeks.
That's what i heard and read too. There are techniques you can try to try to get baby to move (spinning babies is the one i know most) but it doesn't always work.
  • I had an ultrasound at 27 weeks and LO was head down. Our tech said very rarely do babies that are head down at this point turn breech or head up. I'm not sure how scientific this statement is.
  • I asked my doctor at 28 weeks and she said the baby was heads down at that moment, but it doesn't really mean much at this point.
  • My midwife said she will check at my 30 week appointment, which is Thursday. He has been transverse in most of the ultrasounds but I think that I have felt him shift. Crossing my fingers.

  • My 26 week appintment he was head down... I am now 29 weeks today and had another appintment and she said his head was still down! So I'm hoping he stays down there :) my logic is his head is heavier so gravity must keep it down there!! Haha
  • Thanks ladies! Sounds like it's a waiting game and depends on baby... I have my final ultrasound next Wednesday so if she's head down then I'm going to just tell myself she's gonna stay that way.
  • I wish we could tell by ourselves lol!!! I can never tell which way she is but in many ultrasounds (I've had complications so I've had lots of peeks at her, a positive side of it) she has been traversed and also head down but "sunny side up". She moves a lot though and I'm 29 weeks so she has time. I just hope she isnt sunny side up cause back labor doesn't sound too awesome.

  • I'll have to ask at my next appt, 32 w. I'm assuming they can feel it? No more ultrasounds for the rest of the pregnancy unless anything seems off. :(
  • My Lo is breach. I am almost 29 weeks. Turns out what I thought was a butt poking my ribs is actually a head! I am not too concerned since I will be having a csection anyway.

  • Yes they are able to feel, that's why I asked my OB to check for me. A couple days before my appointment I noticed a "quiet" time for a day where she hardly moved (I freaked out and used my Doppler) then the next day she was back to moving good and that night I woke up moaning because my belly felt SO achy... I'm assuming that's from her switching positions. And you can tell by yourself, I'd be too afraid to try it.. All my OB did was feel between my hips where my birth canal is while she pushed on the top of my belly and she said she felt her head. But I wouldn't recommend trying it... Just ask your doctor next appointment. :)
  • I feel kicking everywhere but my ribs... Mostly lots of movement on my bladder and other lower areas. And sometimes I swear she is transverse because I'll feel a lump on my left side and a kick on the right... I'll have to ask at my appointment Monday
  • @navyblueladybug I'm in the same boat as you! I don't feel kicks up by my ribs and I feel kicks in lower areas and swear I have a lump on one side and feel movement on the other side. My appointment is also on Monday so I'll be asking too.
  • That's exactly how she is! I feel her really low.. Bladder & cervix mainly. (I swear I can distinguish her tiny fingers) and I feel her on either side or my belly button, she hasn't ever found her way to my ribs thankfully. Your all a babes might be head down, my mom said you'll feel pressure and I don't... TMI: when I'm using the bathroom there's pressure when pushing and before I go I've felt my lady parts and they're SO swollen so I guess I should be feeling pressure I just haven't noticed.
  • Mine was head down per my midwife from just the regular Doppler and measurements...no idea how she could tell but it makes sense for baby's movements. I was a little surprised it was really a discussion since I'd assume there is still potential for lots of movement (I was 27+5).
  • My baby is transverse, it's obvious especially when she/he stretches. I get a hard knob on my right (assume head) and obvious butt on my left and getting painful now that it's growing larger. Praying he/she flips soon :(
  • My baby is transverse. My midwife said she's actually kind of oblong, but she said it's totally fine and she didn't seem concerned. I've had friends tell me their babies flipped around right up to delivery, and I don't think their position is really an issue until you're about to deliver. They're just comfy in their favorite position.

  • Baby was breech at my 20w appointment but they said that it was super common. And its going to be a few more weeks before they check again. It's one of those things though that is pretty much out of our control, so I am not going to worry about it. I had a sister and cousin both born from breech without any complications. I know it can be frightening and complicated, it also has a chance to not be. :-) Gotta keep those positive juices flowing.

  • My little one switches all the time. I have weekly ultrasounds and in the last 4 she's been in a different position each time (transverse, breech, head down, breech) and I'm starting to worry about a C-section. My other 2 were head down at 20 weeks and stayed that way as far as I could tell. I can't even tell when this one flips over either. Hopefully she still has time to make up her mind to turn the "right" way

  • How do you know baby's position without an US? I asked doc at appt last week and he said there wasn't way to really tell without US. He did say that he thinks baby is already head down @ 28 weeks bc he found heartbeat below my belly button. I watched a video on baby mapping but am still unsure.

  • At my 28 week appointment my doc said our baby girl is head down too and also said that babies that are head down even this early very rarely flip back upward. They will turn from side to side but not up and down.
  • @GardenMama116 not sure my midwife just brought it up as she did my Doppler and regular measurements (she also listened for more specific sounds than any of my other providers...some extra click that was the chambers she said). I think maybe more training by feel and experience maybe than doctors get or have time for? When she said babies position it made sense for the movements I feel. I watched a spinning babies video and thought it was to confusing to bother trying without hands on training.
  • I had my thirty week appointment yesterday and the midwife felt my stomach all over and down in my pubic bone to figure it out. She said that the butt and head are distinguishable because the head will have a more bobbly head feeling to it where the butt will sit still. She said that in two weeks if they are not positive they will do an ultrasound. I used feel all his kicks next to my belly button but now I feel them mostly in my upper belly so I think she is right. Also I'm pretty sure the big hard lump right above my belly button is his butt.

My baby is transverse as well (I can feel his butt and head on either side). I'm tall with a long torso, and I can feel/ see him shifting to different positions still at 31+4. It varies, but they still have plenty of room to move at this point, and my midwife didn't say anything about it being a problem at this point. Hopefully I still have two months for him to turn downward!

Edit bc butt and buttons are not the same thing..

  • Went to an appt. yesterday and told doc the only kicks I feel are still super low, belly button or below like pelvic area. He felt my stomach, listened to heartbeat and said baby was feet down (apparently thats "transverse" from reading this thread); but not to worry he has plenty of time to switch positions and not to worry about being in "breech" until the last couple of weeks. Definetly makes sense considering the consistent movements and where I feel them, if he does switch to head down I'm pretty certain I will notice a difference in movement. I'm not worrying for now, have had too many other problems, healthy baby don't care the position LOL!  (27 weeks +a few days)
  • Try baby mapping if you want to figure it out at home! It's an awesome website and shows you how to distinguish movements and mark them on your belly so you have an idea of baby's position.
