I have a cold and low grade fever...

Is there anything I can take? Waiting on our insurance to kick in before our first visit. Pretty sure it's just upper respiratory infection but ugh. I know fevers are bad but also know I can't take Ibu. Thoughts? I'm miserable!

  • I'm just getting over a terrible cold. My doctor said I could take benadryl, Claritin, Tylenol, chloroseptic throat spray, halls cough drops and I should use the Nettie Pot. I was prescribed penecilian also since I had an ear infection. I hope you feel better soon- its awful being sick and newly pregnant!
  • I had a number of awful colds when I was pregnant with DD. In addition to the other suggestions, the humidifier was my biggest friend.

  • I drank a 16oz carton of pineapple coconut water a day (full of vitamin c and other electrolytes) - half in the morning, half in the afternoon, ate tons of fruits and vegetables, used a netti pot, and breath right strips a couple of weeks ago. I felt better in two days - faster than I've ever felt better with a bad cold. The big rule of thumb for a netti pot is to make sure you use filtered or boiled water that's been cooled. You want to make sure you kill anything that could potentially be in the water since you're basically pouring water into your head.

The healthline link you provided states that it is best to avoid all medication during the first 12 weeks, but then goes on to list safe meds for after the 12 weeks.

"According to the University of Michigan Health System and most OB-GYNs, it's best to avoid all medications in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. That's a critical time for the development of your baby's vital organs. Many doctors also recommend caution after 28 weeks. Speak with your doctor before taking any medication if you’re pregnant, or trying to get pregnant.

Several medications are considered safe after 12 weeks of pregnancy"

During my pregnancy with the twins the only meds my Drs approved were Tylenol and saline drops for colds and rhinitis.   It sucks, but you get through it.

I'd be careful this early on taking medications without the express consent/instruction from your doctor.  You shouldn't be relying a bunch of internet strangers for this kind of info.

  • I'm a big fan of netty pots and have used them for years. I think they really help with congestion issues.
