Has anyone painted their kitchen cabinets?

If so, how long did it take?

I want to refinish our cabinets, but they are so plain that a new stain really won't help much. I think that painting them would actually look better along with new hardware. I am just dreading taking on the task.

Anyone do this? How did it look and how long did it take?

Re: Has anyone painted their kitchen cabinets?

  • We painted ours white for a quick fix until we remodel.  It looks good and was pretty easy.  We had to use a really strong, nasty primer and then we rolled paint onto them.  It really didn't take that long and was worth it.

  • My husband would probably caution you on how you paint them.  It's really tough to paint them with a brush and not show the brush strokes.  he would recommend using a sprayer.

  • It takes a while mostly b/c of having to take all the doors off, sand them, prime them, paint them... bleh.  I haven't, but I helped a friend do hers.  If you take the time to sand/prime it looks good.  Looks bubbly & lumpy (and peels off) if you don't.

  • I think the sanding took the longest when we did ours in our old house.  I sat outside on the back patio, sanded, primed, and painted all the cabinets.  My legs were so freaking sore the next day!  Mostly because I squated when I did it.  But it was well worth it.  They looked so much better with new paint and new hardware!

  • I think spraying sounds like a fantastic idea. I think it would apply much more uniformly. Now, spraying the doors would be easy, but what about the cabinets themselves? How do you not get it everywhere?
  • Later tonight I should post my before & after pics, it will motivate you to do it! They look awesome. DH did them over the space of about a week at night after work (one cabinet at a time).
