Re: Advice anyone please?

  • Personally I would probably err on the side of caution and not go.

Your doctor is telling you that you shouldn't go so you shouldn't go.  Nothing a bunch of internet strangers says is going to change your doctor's recommendation.

  • Is there a reason your OB advised you not to go? Are you high risk? You can safely fly up to 36 weeks. I don't know if you have any other children, but if it were me, I would go. Traveling with kids is a whole different ballgame, so I say go for it and use common sense.
  • I would take your OB's advice. In my experience, my OB is pretty lenient about when and where I can travel. If she advised me not to go to India in my second tri, I would listen.
  • They only said i shouldnt go because it is what they recomend all patients but im not at risk and they said it would be safe to fly
  • I travelled quite a bit my last pregnancy (longish flights too, NY-LA, NY-Sweden, NY-London), and I was fine aside from a little swelling in the end of my second trimester. But, I would actually be more concerned with where you're going than the duration of the flight (although there is legitimate concern for blood clots on long flights, if I recall correctly).

My friend is from India and when she brought her DS back to visit family she was concerned about water quality for mixing formula and shipped ready to feed bottles specifically for that reason. Your immune system is already compromised, so I can't imagine having some awful gastro issues would be particularly pleasant. If your doctor advised you not to go, it seems like that's the most logical thing to do.
  • Don't go. If it was like London or France I'd say go. It's not about the flight. Like pp said you have to think of the water quality. Then there's foods you aren't used to and the conditions they are prepared in. They prob have some gnarly bugs and mosquitoes there with different diseases than here. Then you have to think of something unexpected goes on during your pregnancy like you're bleeding or start getting contractions or get a yeast infection or even fall down the stairs you are gonna be treated by their health system and in a different language. Are you comfortable with that? My baby was born at 28 weeks, well within travel period and there was no warning or signs. I'm glad I was home.
  • I've worked with a team in Chennai for the past 3 years, and have had plenty of opportunity to go to India but I won't go. ESPECIALLY not pregnant. I know it's a beautiful country, with beautiful people and I love the Indian culture, but I really don't have a desire to go. From my coworkers who have gone, they've had to get a TON of vaccines and shots in order to go, and had to be really careful about not drinking the water, etc. I also don't know whether those vaccines are safe for pregnant woman? You also have to be very careful of where to go and our work ensures that you have a guide the entire time so you don't find yourself in a questionable place/situation. It's just too risky in my opinion.

You may not be at risk now but you don't know what kind of complications might arise between now and then.

For example, I had placenta previa that wasn't noticed until I was about 16 weeks along.

  • I will be traveling all over god's green earth until I am medically prohibited from doing so; my job requires a ton of travel. I would absolutely go. With one caveat: you need to make sure that they know you are pregnant and can make accommodations should you, for instance, need to stop walking because of swelling, or if something happens and you do need help.

I say go if you really want to, and you know you can do so safely (access to clean water, reputable food places, hospitals, etc). I would also make sure it is okay with the Honor Society planning the trip as well as they may not allow you to go. I was actually planning a trip to Korea for a few weeks, but have since cancelled it because it's Korea...lol...so really it's up to you. I'm a travel lover though, so if it was a short trip, I'd go.

ETA: Also check about vaccines....that may not allow you to go because you may not be allowed to get the necessary vaccines while pregnant.
