FTM Dumb question - leave rings at home?

i read somewhere, maybe in the preregistration for the hospital, to leave jewelry at home which makes sense in case of a c section. But does everyone take their wedding ring(s) off before driving up the hospital? Id rather do that than have to take them off at the hospital obviously but I haven't heard anyone talk about this and I'm afraid I'll forget in the heat of the moment!

Re: FTM Dumb question - leave rings at home?

  • I just had my LO on Friday, and I didn't leave mine. They had me take them off just in case of swelling, however I could not get my wedding ring off. I ended up having to have a C-Section, and they do need all jewelry taken off, but they left it on. So, it ended up working out for me anyways, but it is probably a good idea just to tasks them off now.

  • I put my wedding set in the safety deposit box at the bank since I haven't been able to wear them in two months anyways. I figure they are safer there than the hospital (and I always forget where I put my jewelry at home). Coming from someone who used to work in a hospital, I would highly recommend not going in with your expensive jewelry.
  • I would take them off before going to hospital that way you don't lose them. Even if you don't have a C section, they usually give you a ton of iv fluids, which causes swelling.
  • I wear mine on a necklace chain. Friend that's an l and d nurse has told me how much they hate having to cut them off... And that happens a lot. I prefer to keep mine close but either way I wouldn't wear them because things can change fast in labor! :)

  • Ok so glad I asked! I hadn't heard anything about it which is pretty surprising considering all the research/obsessive googling I've been doing for almost 9 months. Sounds like a good idea to just take them off in the next week or so (37 w yesterday). I hadn't thought about the iv fluids making you swell.
  • I worw mine during both my previous c-sections. Just pulled out the baby photo albums to confirm!

    Hmmmmm interesting!
  • I am going to leave mine at home but that is as much so I didn't take them off for any reason and leave them at the hospital as anything else.
  • I am going to leave mine at home, but mine stopped fitting comfortably a few weeks ago. Otherwise, I would be wondering the same thing. I thought about packing them in my hospital bag but I think they're safer at home. I am just going to have a family member bring them to me at the hospital. Our family will be helping to take care of our dog while we are in the hospital anyway, so someone will be able to bring them to me the next day (or even same day depending on timing of birth). Hopefully they will fit by then. Not to hijack your post, but does anyone know how quickly swelling goes away postpartum?

I had constant swelling due to BP from 32 weeks on, it took a week before my swelling went down and my fingers and feet looked normal again.

  • Baby #5 here and I've never taken mine off for the hospital.
  • I never took mine off. I think they say that so they're not responsible for valuable things being lost/stolen on their watch.

  • Friend of mine (male, who's wife just had their first) suggested that DH leave his at home too for hand holding/squeezing purposes. Might not affect everyone but DHs ring is pretty wide and can sometimes hit his pinky knuckle. As for me, I lost my ring privileges in the heat of summer.
  • Mine stopped fitting several weeks ago so my husband went out an got me a much less expensive "Mrs" bracelet from Kate Spade and I love it. I'll probably wear it to the hospital since it's loose enough to not be affected by swelling, and it was less than $50 so if I lose it, it's not the absolute end of the world (though I do love it!). Maybe there's a solution like that where you could get an inexpensive replacement (earrings maybe?) to feel like you have your wedding jewels.
  • Well after this discussion I decided to just see how easily my rings slipped on and off (usually on the looser side) and I couldn't get them off! So that made me determined to take them off just in case the hospital insisted and I'm more swollen in 2-3weeks (likely!). It was painful but I oiled up and got them off. @MSturtebury good idea. I'm sure I can find something I already have that's meaningful and inexpensive just in case!
  • @Louisl I did the same thing! Haha! I can still get mine off with soap though so I've been testing it every day because I am now paranoid lol.

That's very smart. I just took for granted I could take mine off. Ended up needing copious amounts of oil and even still it hurt!
  • I am having a c-section tomorrow, fyi, the preadmissions associate told me to make sure all my jewelry was off including rings.
