December 2015 Moms

If I eat like they want me to I won't at all :(

so I have known from 14 weeks I was high risk of preeclampsia and my blood pressure may sky rocket, well it has so I had to be put on blood pressure medicine, no big deal. Than I have to cut out salt, no big deal I could deal with it for baby. Next came being diagnosed with gestational diabetes, limited carb and high protein diet, ok I can do that. Now I find out I have gallstones which the diet for that is the BRAT diet, and I'm allergic to bananas. Rice, Applesauce, and toast will make the diabetes go out of control. I'm just so over welmed and add to that, I have to go to the high risk doctor. The nurse stated I most likely would not be eliagiable to have my gallbladder removed until after I give birth (lucky me) so it's dangerous if I eat what I need to in order to stabilize my diabetes for my gallstones. And bad for my diabetes if I eat for the gallstones. I just want to go under a rock and cry. I'm just praying the doctor will have a solution. 3 more hours and I'll be on my way. Sitting at work has been hell today.

  • Geese that's a lot to deal with, sorry you're going through this. Hopefully the doctor has a solution today!

  • I'm so sorry! As PP said, I hope they can refer you to a great dietician who can do some meal planning with you and help take some of the food planning stress off!
  • Oh my goodness I am so sorry!! I hope they get everything figured out for you!!
  • I've never heard of having to eat the BRAT diet because you are having gallbladder issues.

I was always told fresh fruits & veggies, lean meats, whole grains & plenty of fluids. I was always told to avoid foods with high fats, high salt, etc.
  • Oh lord that's a lot to take on! As PPs have said ask for a referal to a dietician and see if they can help! Hope all goes well for you and LO
  • OP something has got to give. You are getting contradicting nutritional advice which is really overwhelming. I would take my gallbladder information that I received from my doctor to the OB (call them don't wait for an appointment) explain the situation and don't stop until you get an acceptable answer. I hope things get better very soon!

    THIS^^
Just wondering who gave you the advice for the BRAT diet with gallstones because that is something I've never heard of.

Here is some information for you regarding diet and gallstones.

This is the exact print out they'd give you at the hospital if you went to ER for gallstones.
  • @hplunkett2883 Girl you rock!! Thanks for your GD insight I had nothing to add for her for that.
  • Good grief! That is a lot to deal with all at once! I don't have any practical advice with the diet, but I sure hope you are able to find a nutritionist or dietician who can help! I also hope things get easier for you very soon. Good luck!

  • Oh gosh, hope you can get in with your ob and a dietitian asap.  I have celiac and diabetes and have had to go low sodium before and it can be overwhelming.  Not to mention very depressing :(
  • Luckily my OB was able to put me on medicine for the diabetes because even following advice from my dietitian I've been with since 17 wasn't helping. 90% of everything I would eat would put me into a gallbladder attack. Doctor pretty much told me to do what I could and to try and stay as fresh and lean as possible. It's pretty bad when I was doubled over after a piece of chicken. I'm just hoping that I can get everything under control. Luckily the high risk doctor seems to think the high blood pressure and GD have been working against each other and baby only measuring a week ahead. Thanks for all the support I was having a complete melt down, and seem to be doing better today. It definitely helped when the high risk doctor told me I had a boring visit, now it's every 2 weeks for sonograms and testing...
  • Glad the doc was able to provide guidance and reassurance. A boring visit is nice :) Thinking of you and hope that things are less stressful know that you have a plan.

  • Damn op, that really sucks..

Is there one source of truth you trust to walk you through all this and get you on a diet that will nourish you both and not make you feel like garbage? You need that one source of truth.
  • Praying you get some answers soon! Get it together docs! This mama needs to eat! :)
  • You poor thing!! Hope things are looking up!!
  • If you have been going to the same dietitian for years and it isn't helping you might need a new one with more expertise in your current conditions. Some medical providers do better than others at keeping up with continuing education and implementing new research--some get stuck in their ways which isn't always good for patients. I'd try another one and if it isn't better you can always return to your normal dietitian. By the way the BRAT diet is intended primarily for diarrhea or a phase between liquids and bland foods after a stomach virus, and isn't meant for long term use.
  • BTW I am a registered dietitian and this is not medical advice because I don't know you or your medical history. Many patients have diseases with conflicting dietary guidelines but it is our job is to prioritize dietary restrictions and explain which ones are not negotiable and which ones you have some wiggle room with--I can write the perfect diet for my patient but it does not do anyone any good if it isn't achievable by the patient (I love to tell my patients we do things gradually and work on better not perfect, I can tell you to drink skim instead of whole milk but if that isn't going to happen, 2% is still progress and we will work at making it to 1%--for example). A good dietitian should help you learn to manage your diet and consider your quality of life at the same time.
  • The problem with my dietician is not that I have been seeing her for years and it not helping its that she is currently 900+ miles away from me. My first few months down in Georgia I was able to make quick visits up to NY to see my parents and my doctors. Unfortunately with pregnancy I wasn't able to get back up to see her. She was going based on a phone call to hold me over until I could get a dietician down here. She knew my problems in the past and wanted me to go on the strictest form of diet possible to get back to square 1 before I start reintroducing food and seeing what bothers me and what doesn't. Something she has had great success with my hypoglycemia and endometriosis in the past, unfortunately not so great for GD.

Unfortunately for me my doctor is more insistent that the GD class is the fix all for all patients instead of one on one consult which is what I would much more prefer. He also doesn't seem to think I'm going to need surgery on my gallbladder, which is going to be horrible money wise. My sister "didn't need her's removed" until it was an emergency 2 years after she told them they needed to take it out

I'm taking it one meal, and one day at a time. I'd rather have pain from the gallstones than my sugar going haywire and lucky for me I can avoid salt which is pretty easy for the high blood pressure, which with the smallest amount of medicine is back to my normal 110/65.

  • My GD patients had to do a group session the first time but after that all their follow-up was one-on-one. Are they not giving you an individual follow ups? We managed our own follow-ups once the doctor sent us the patient.
I see--it will be pretty hard for your dietitian to stay on top of everything when you're being seen elsewhere.
