3rd Trimester

Had baby today- FTM advice!

Gabriella Rose decided she was ready at 33w+6 (DD was 10/30) Wanted to beat her mommy who was born at 34 weeks so thankfully was prepped and ready! IUGR baby so came out 4lb9oz. She is in the NICU but breathing on own and starting to latch. So far so good. Will try to feed in am with syringe and see how she does. Then will be able to tell better length of stay.

Anyway- wanted to share as I thought maybe I could help scared or clueless FTM's like me. Woke up to pee this am at 330. Got back in bed and gushed fluid. It was clear with a pink tinge in toilet when wiped and knew it wasn't pee. No contractions. Called hospital and they said come in. Confirmed water broke and since I was one day shy of 34 weeks didn't do anything to stop process just gave me steroid for baby. I was 1cm when admitted, went to 2.5 cm and started getting contractions. Bc we weren't sure if it was the real deal yet and baby was still high, nurse made it seem like I had awhile for epidural and maybe didn't want to get it too soon cuz I could be bedridden for 20+hours. Pain was getting worse but it felt like bad period cramps. I had never had contractions so it just was not what I thought. My whole stomach wasn't rolling or tightening but more just my pelvic area where you get period cramps. That's truly what it felt like and they got worse fast and lasted longer. So then I asked for the epidural and it got really bad waiting for it to kick in and then wasn't working on the left side. So started contracting around 8-9am and now it was 11 and was finally getting comfy. They checked me again and I was 10 cm! So started pushing at 11:45 when doctor got there. 4 hours later she was here. Bottom line is- don't wait to get epidural if that's your plan anyway. It does not run out ever!!! Yes four hours of pushing was exhausting and frustrating bc baby was face up, but I would take that any day over the 1-2 hours of bad contractions. And it may speed you up like me!! Could have just been more comfortable from the get go. That was the worst part otherwise I would say labor wasn't that bad!

Re: Had baby today- FTM advice!

  • Congratulations and I'm glad that although you went early, you and baby are okay! :)
With that said, labor and delivery differ very much for every woman and every delivery. This was your experience and no woman (or even you) will have an experience exactly like this. You said an epidural "will not run out ever" this may have been for you but I have had an epidural "run out". I've always been advised to wait until you just can not take it anymore to get an epidural and find that to work best for me. Although, like I said, every woman is different. :) Again, congratulations!

  • We can't get the epidural here till we are at least 4.5-5 cms and after that they refuse to give us it ... Our epidural can't run out, it's being continuesly pumped through the catheter from a bag of the medication, they just change the bag !
  • @christina4436 congratulations and thanks for sharing! as a ftm, i always love to know the finer details of what to expect when labor starts!
  • Congrats! Hope all is well with you & the baby
  • Thank you so much for sharing your story! From a clueless FTM :) congratulations on your sweet baby

This. Also, my L&D nurse said that more times than not women who get the epidural sooner (as soon as the feel a little pain) than later when (it is very uncomfortable and contractions are strong, regular and productive) that pitocin, and other methods are needed to get contractions going.

@amberrmariee20 : I am a bit confused on your post. You stated that you can't get them until 4.5/5. Then you state after that they won't give them??? If I read that righ, that ridiculous! My friend walked around 5.5/6 cm for 2 weeks before going into labor. Me I walked 4 weeks at 4cm dilated.
Yes !!! We have a very small window to opt for an epidural here. They refuse to give you it before 4.5-5 cms and after that they won't give us it, it no longer is an option !! I went in at 2 cms, I chose to have it at 4.5 cms and if I didn't get it and then chose to have it around 6+ cms they would of told me it's too late !

Epidural is continuous. Rather you had it keep going would have been up to you/nurse pushing button again. If you push it again for another dose it won't stop. Maybe they just didn't think or know you wanted more...
