Accidentally hurting baby

There are times when I am holding him and readjusting and I accidentally scratch him with my fingernail or my wedding ring. He starts screaming in pain and I just feel awful!! I don't want him to associate me with pain, but I don't know how to prevent these instances because they are just random accidents. Does this happen to anyone else?

Re: Accidentally hurting baby

  • Awee poor baby. Nope not here my nails are rather short & I don't wear rings hardly ever.maybe while your at home just take off your ring. & trim your nails a tad bit. ( not trying to sound like a jerk here ) but honestly you really don't want your baby to ascoicate you w/ pain. Sorry it must honestly break your heart alil to see him cry from it.

  • Ya I definitely don't wear my rings anymore around the house. My nails are fairly short too but maybe I'll keep them shorter. It's happened two distinct times (one being tonight obviously because it caused me to write this post).

  • Don't worry too much. I practically punched my kid in the face cause the zipper on the sleep sack got stuck. Just make sure you comfort him and he will remember you for that!
  • It happens. Sometimes when I'm trying to hold LO and do something at the same time he gets squirmy and headbuts my collarbone with his nose and starts crying. It only lasts a moment but I always feel bad and think it's my fault for not holding on to him tight enough. Little things are going to happen. I think as long as your not neglecting or purposely hurting him he won't associate u with pain.
  • I agree with the pp. I think you would have to do a lot more than that for the baby to associate you with pain. Things happen and what you mentioned is very minor, and it's probably more shock than pain that's making baby cry.
  • My girl is sensitive. DH took off her bath time blankie too fast and she started screaming out in pain. There are countless other instances... I promise you, you are not the only one.

My friend's father has a saying, "Don't worry if you break 'em, you can always make more."
  • I've smoothed poor LO's foot between me and the shopping cart. Felt horrible, he cried and all the ppl behind me that were just watching as I juggled him and putting the stuff on the belt had to wait even longer as I comforted him.
  • I was playing with my LO on the couch and didn't see my weenie dog jump up...she then decided to jump from one side of the couch to the other, using little man's FACE as a springboard.....I felt awful!!! image
  • We were at dinner the other night and I was cutting something. The tiniest piece flew off and landed on her arm, que scream. :(

It was so tiny, didn't even leave a red mark. Made me feel like SHIT!

  • I clipped the tip of my son's finger cutting his nails. The look of surprise and pain was heartbreaking! I felt terrible.

  • I bit my nails off the first day I scratched him.
  • I dropped my phone on my little girls head while taking photos of her :))
  • Y little man is a squirmy guy and when his uncle was putting him in the swing he pinched his finger in the buckles I have pinched mine a couple times making sure I didn't get him and it HURTS! I felt so bad I comforted him and boobed him. Boob makes everything better lol. His uncle felt so bad. They don't break easily and as long as you comfort them they will know your love :)
  • I dropped my iPhone on my first daughter...twice. Don't judge me. They are resilient little boogers.
  • I bumped my LO's head on a doorway while wearing him in the K'tan, and I cut his skin while trimming his nails. :/

I pinched my little girls thigh in her bouncy seat buckle. She was upset but I'm pretty sure I cried more than she did. Accidents will happen, I know we all do the best we can. Just give them that extra lovin :P
  • It happens, don't beat yourself up.

My 2 year old was climbing up the cement steps of my friend's front porch and suddenly started to fall backwards off the top one. I was behind her and had a bag in one hand, I reached out automatically to try to catch her and somehow SLAPPED her on the face so hard as my hand came up to grab her. I did catch her from falling but I felt horrible and almost cried. Obviously it was good she didn't crack her head open but I still felt bad.
  • I have clipped my DD's fingers and toes while cutting hee nails. I felt terrible!

Also, once when she was crying and my DH was holding her on his lap, my dog tried to jump on her and scratched her on the leg. She didn't like that at all! The dog was just trying to comfort her because he hates it when she cries.

Anyway, we all have those moments.... babies aren't exactly made of glass and as long as these moments are few and far between and not intentional, I think we'll all be OK.
  • This thread is making me feel so much better. I thought I was a horrible mother because I accidentally scratched her face. I'd cry whenever I looked at it. (I blame that on hormones!)
  • I ended up cutting my nice natural nails before I gave birth, the only reason I did it was because I used to scratch my sisters LO before I got pregnant lol so I learn from that.... I don't wear my ring for that reason too but my DH hates the fact I forget to put it back on when we get out the house :-@ I dropped my iPhone on him yesterday :( I feel so guilty... Glad this is a normal thing lol
  • When I also put my LO on my shoulder... My earrings scratch his head!! :-/
  • When I also put my LO on my shoulder... My earrings scratch his head!! :-/

This. All the time. I feel terrible but he truly doesn't even seem to notice most of the time and it doesn't leave scratches on him.
  • DH decided to clip our DD nails and ended up cutting her a little bit got fussy and refuse to open her hand, when she open it DH saw a little blood and I think he freak out alot more than our baby did, he really felt horrible he almost cried but at this point baby was as if nothing had happened. Also the other day while I was giving her a bath by accident I ended up spilling some water in her face as i was rinsing off her head. She loves baths and lately she discovered how much fun it is to splash water with her feet and she moves alot in the bath so as i was pouring water in her head, she moved and it ended up in her face, she freak out and for like what felt an eternity she was trying to catch her breath back OMG scariest moment of my life!! It was a few seconds but i felt like it took for ever for her to catch her breath and then she cried for few mins with a terrified look in her face I was about to call 911 the worst thing is that i was alone in the house, it was not alot of water but i guess the shock of feeling water on her face like that for the first time also startle her I couldnt even sleep that night making sure she was ok.. Now I am scared to bathe her by myself. She does not seem to remember she went straight back to loving her baths.
  • It happens! My LO was very fussy a couple of days ago. He was squirming around so much and head-butted me in the face so that my front tooth hit his forehead. Of course he screamed even more and I felt terrible :(
  • Day one in the hospital I was holding LO and was finally able to eat! Of course I would drop a bit of Jello on our brand new baby...DH still hasn't heard about that one!

I have totally done this with my older kids with jackets and sweaters! So far so good and haven't done it with baby yet!

  • I had my LO in the K'tan during a storm.  When I took her out, she screamed.  Somehow her little foot got tangled up and it was super red, almost purple.  It obviously had the circulation cut off.  I massaged her foot and prayed she was okay.  She got color back, but she had a mark for a few days.  I felt terrible and was a little paranoid about using the carrier again.

  • Oh man- I feel bad for "love"-ing any of these! I've just been reading and thinking, yup done that, or yup I'll probably end up doing that...

@jerseygirl227 how scary! I'm constantly checking LO's hands and feet for hair tourniquets because he is constantly pulling out my hair! I never thought that the carrier could be too tight on hands and feet!
