Breastfeeding _ nipple soreness

I'm a FTM and wondering how long nipple soreness lasts? My son is 9 days old and it is still pretty painful. I know they say it shouldn't hurt and it has to be the way he is latching but I feel I am getting the deepest latch I can get. I know I am producing enough milk bc I have been pumping once a day and getting plenty. I am just not sure if it's time to call a LC. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Breastfeeding _ nipple soreness

  • I met with an LC today related to this. I know he has a great latch but I'm so sore too. She basically said as long as there is no visible nipple trauma, this is all part of the nipple toughening process. She said as long as it isn't getting worse, it will go away.

  • Thank you so much, that makes me feel much better! I am just hoping for some relief soon!
  • My little guy will be 9 days tomorrow and we have been dealing with this too. I've been working so hard to make sure the latch is good... But I still had A LOT of soreness and even some cracking etc. Plus he would fuss when it was time to eat, and I would pretty much have to force him to latch, which I know doesn't always make for a good latch anyways.

My last 2 feedings I switched to the football hold and it worked amazing! No fussing, he wasnt sucking so hard and seemed to get a lot more milk! It looks to me like my little guy just doesn't like to be on his side! I don't wanna jinx it but it seems to be working MUCH BETTER! Hopefully you can find a good position that works for you!

It hurts no doubt. My LO is 1 week old and latching / eating awesome since birth, but I am for sure still toughening. I bought Avent thermal gel packs and use Honest Co. Nipple Balm after every feeding and that seems to be helping! Hope you feel better soon.

The nipple balm has definitely helpEd. I'm using the honest brand also. This hurts so bad though. I was in tears earlier while feeding Hoping this pain will go away soon.
  • I had some pretty significant nipple pain with my first. I highly recommend the Lansinoh soothies, especially if you refrigerate them. I also found that coconut oil helped with healing them. I did not like lanolin except for when I was showering and it helped with the pain from having the water hit them directly. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it was weeks before I felt "all better". I think most people recover more quickly than I did though.
  • My LO is 6 days old and I'm BF for the 3rd time. I can tell you there has always been a "sore" stage with each child. I was told by a LC with my first that until they heal it will be sore when they latch on but if the latch is good any discomfort should go away.

If it hurts the whole time LO is nursing see a LC. Otherwise, hang in there. It does get better.
  • I feel so bad for my boobs! He latches perfect but when I put him on i have to brace myself because the pain. A few days ago they were bloody but it went away so I must be doing better.

I am really surprised it hurts this much 2nd time around. I just finished nursing for 13 months one year ago. I thought maybe I'd be calloused or at least used to it.
I didn't have pain like this last time because she never latched and I used a nipple shied for 6 weeks.
This one latched right away, and it's been 3 days and I'm in agony. I'm avoiding feeding because it hurts so bad. There's no blisters, bleeding, or open sores. The LC in the hospital said the latch and suck are great.
I'm doing saline gauze soaks in breast pads for 20 min after each feed, and alternating lanolin and a prescription cream called triple nipple or all-purpose nipple ointment (APNO). I wear a cup-like shield to keep my shirt off my nipples during all waking hours.
And yet I'm crying out, tears streaming, during every feed.

I found an article that said the pain should intensify day 4-5 and lessen and be gone by 7-10. But two recent 2nd time mom friends both quoted 2 and 3 weeks this time around. Ugh.
ETA: also I'm a redhead and so far multiple nurses have told me it's just because I have red hair and fair skin that it hurts so bad.
  • Pump using ur breast pump for a few minutes before latching baby on. I found my girl latched so much easier cos it makes a good shape of ur nipple (i sometimes felt mines just fell out!). It also helped with the soreness too for some strange reason. Worth a go! Xx
  • I understand with the sore nipples. I went to the lactation and she game me these nipple shields. Omg the are a heaven sent. I can feed her all day long.
