BH contractions.

Sorry if this is a repeat but I searched and couldn't find anything.

I was wondering if anyone had discussed Braxton hicks contractions with their Dr yet? I never had them with my first but have been getting a lot of them in the evenings. Yesterday they were at least every 10mins and whenever I changed position or walked. I know they are harmless but I wondered if frequent ones could lead to early labor?? Simply seems like I'm having a lot of them but maybe that's because I'm also not used to them.

I will ask my Dr at my next appt in two weeks, but thought someone might have some insight for me. Thanks!

  • Ok thanks! That's basically what I've been doing but they like to attack when I'm cooking supper etc. Hard to stop and put my feet up all the time :)

I feel ya, hard to stop and lay down with a toddler who sees you laying on the couch as an opportunity to jump on you or jump over the baby.

  • I've been having them everyday since 18 weeks but on tues night they started and haven't stopped untill today still getting them but not as often! I was checked by midwife and had a scan and my cervix is still closed and baby is doing fine they told me to drink lots of water if your dehydrated they'd a lot worse and I've spend 2 days in bed other than my tests yesterday. Aparently you won't notice them with 1st pregnancys as u do with subsequent. If changing position and drinking and resting doesn't make them stop still good to be checked out to be sure
  • My OB gave me a magic number. When they happen I'm supposed to drink water and go lay down. If I exceed that magical number within x amount of time to the hospital I go.

I actually talked to my Dr. because I haven't had any yet! Everything I've been reading talks about how it's totally normal to be having them at this time and how they prepare your uterus for labor, so I actually got worried about not having any. My doc said was totally fine to not have them, but now if they do ever start, I'll probably freak out about that too. Haha.

    Edit: typo
  • They're driving me insane at the moment but my midwife said they're worse with each pregnancy and this is baby 3. I can usually time them too, they're exactly the same as contractions just not painful, more uncomfy. I've been told if they go on consistently in a timed manner for more than 90 mins to go in.

Like most PPs have said, water and changing position seems to help me. And a hot bath in the evening, they're usually worse at the end of the day because my body's angry with me!
  • I am 32 weeks and get them all the time but they are especially strong in the evenings. At birthing class they told us to drink a big glass of water and lay down. If you continue to get them after an hour, go in. They usually resolve for me if I lay down. I don't know that I would actually go in unless they became painful or I started leaking fluid. That's just me though.
  • I'm a FTM and I have them. Doctor told that if they become regular and every ten minutes over an hour to call and come in. I'm at risk for pre term labor though. I thought I was having BH at 26 weeks and they were contractions. Or if my water breaks too. There is a difference that I can recognize now.
  • I dont even know If I've ever had one.
  • I never had them with my daughter, but I am this time around. I wish this is what the real ones felt like, would make having babies a breeze lol

I've only had a couple here and there but when they happen, they steal my breath and bring tears to my eyes. I'm extremely grateful that I'm having a scheduled c-section this time instead of sitting through induced labor and contractions for 24+ hours.
  • I was given the rule 5-1-1 for contractions... which means go to the hospital if they are 5 minutes apart, last at least 1 min, and occur over 1hr consistently. This is more for actual labor. BH contacting should be more erratic and not follow this pattern. If you are seeing a pattern, call your doc or go to the hospital. You could also be dehydrated, so drink 2-3 glasses of water and lie on your left side for 1 hr. If pattern continues... it's go time.
  • Didn't have them with my first came 5 days early but had them with 2nd 1 week late. I honestly don't think it has any effect on when you will go into labor. My problem this time is I keep having them in car while driving. Mine are just because of the pressure of my position while driving sucks but they aren't that often so I will just have to deal.
  • They told me I am just going to have to learn to live with them it's horrible how can it be normal to have them all day every day for 3 days in a row now please has anyone else had this happen or am I just wierd so over it I'm exhausted and my stomach is so sore from hvng a constant workout I have spent 2 of the 3 days in bed made no difference and have drink lots of water I feel like everyone thinks I am making it up but yet they've all seen it with their own eyes and because I'm not dialating it's nothing to worry about

This is not necessarily a medically approved remedy, but you could also try something like a warm bath with just candle light or anything else that relaxes you body AND mind this evening.  When you get out try to take a unisom or benadryl which will put you to sleep.  I've found that sometimes my mental stress is as big a barrier to my physical well being as anything going on with my physical body.  The sleep tablet will put you out completely and so your mind will finally shut off perhaps stopping any distress signals it's putting out to the rest of your body.  It may not work, but you never know and both unisom and benadryl are approved as safe medications to take during pregnancy.  It has helped mine on a couple of occasions.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • I've had them a few times now, but the most prevalent incidence was when I was on the elliptical at the gym. I stopped right away. I let my doctor know and she said I definitely did the right thing by stopping.

I've been having them while driving for the last few months. I frequently drive between SC and GA so it makes for a very uncomfortable drive. Thankfully I'm done traveling for the rest of this pregnancy.

  • Thanx @VexedMommy I'll give that a go I def think mental stress isn't helping! Think I need a wee bit of timeout to myself to relax and refresh

I had something similar happen at 26 weeks. I was having contractions every 3 minutes or so (for 30s each) and they went like that for about 30 hours. I went to L&D pretty early on and they just sent me home and told me to drink water. I stayed in bed and they eventually went away and now I am just having occasional ones here and there. So hang on, it doesn't necessarily mean you are going to have this happen for the rest of the pregnancy. I am a FTM too.
  • I had a BHC last night, only 1, but it lasted for 5minutes and went away. Started in my back and ended in my stomach. Normal? Im 30wks (Monday) This is my 1st pregnancy, too.

I've been contracting at least 2-3 times an hour around the clock for the last 7 weeks, sometimes significantly more frequently and every now and then I'll go an hour or two without any noticeable ones. This probably isn't the "anyone else deal with this" story you want, but it's the one I've got. I've mostly gotten used to it, though they've been getting stronger the past week or two so they do stop me in my tracks from time to time.
  • I'm been going thru them for the last few days.. Water and changing positions relieves..
  • I had them a lot with my first. They were times when they were consistently 5 minutes apart for up to an hour but then would stop. Baby came full term with no complications. Everyone is a little different, I wouldn't worry too much unless they are painful or you leak fluid
  • Thanx @kmd91 just nice to hear I'm
Not the only one except sorry your going through it as well! Once or twice a day I didn't mind but all the time it's tiring! They are def not as bad now thank goodness! :)
  • Holy crap I don't remember bh hurting so bad with my 1st.... from about 5:45-6:43 this morning I had contractions... not going to lie I was just about ready to go in... As I was contracting I told hubby this was a mistake I don't want to do this and I'm not ready.... I got laughed at. FYI that only makes me mad when I'm on pain he got yelled at I cried and peed myself.... only 34 weeks and scared af
  • @bossmomma hope you've been checked out ? Braxton hicks shouldn't hurt hope your feeling better
