Formula question

This question is for anyone who has given their baby formula. I BF but I am curious when it comes to making up bottles of formula. I have a lot of friends who formula feed their babies and majority of them have those bottle warmer devices. So my question is don't you just use warm water from the tap or do you have to use cold and then warm the entire bottle up with a warmer or sitting it in hot water?

Re: Formula question

  • I've read that warm water from the tap had the possibility to contain more lead, so it's best to use a warmer or warm it in hot water.

  • I was told by the nurse at the hospital use warm tap water. She said it will help the formula dissolve and give a smoother consistency so that's what we do.

Not sure where you read this but all the water in your house comes from the same place so...this isn't true.
  • Tap water is different in every state or country but where we live in NJ tap water is great. I FF and we just use warm tap water

  • Use cooled, boiled water from the cold tap.
  • I use warm tap water. And there's been no bad affects after three months. :)
  • I use room temperature distilled water for formula and then I store in the fridge for up to 24 hrs. My son hates warm bottles, he takes it cold right out of the fridge or room temp.
  • jumping over from July, I buy nursery water from the grocery store and leave at room temp. You can run it under hot tap water once your fix the bottle if they want it warm. When I put it in the ice box, I do it the old fashioned way and boil some water in a pan and then place the bottle in the pan for about 30 seconds and then check it until it's warm enough.
  • Very interesting. So seems to be a little bit of everything - good to know! Thanks ladies for satisfying my curiosity.

So fascinated on the fact you can buy special water, that's so cool
  • I don't warm my sons formula . Use bottle water
  • We boil water, I have 2 jugs on the counter filled with boiled water, left at room temperature. I fill his bottles as needed. Unless we are going somewhere for the day I will mis the bottles ahead and put them in the fridge, but If we are home I poor the boiled water to the amount I need into his bottle and then put in a bottle warmer. When it's warmed I then put the amount of formula I need in and mix it. Mixes better with the warmer water. Most of it is all preference I find and what works easier for you. Lol
  • I just use water that is filtered through our fridge.  I haven't warmed my babies bottles up since they were just a couple weeks old.  They both take it cold.  Not sure if that makes me a mean mom or not but they are fine with it!
  • I have formula fed my 18 week old since birth. At the hospital they told me to use DISTILLED water for the bottles (you can buy jugs of it everywhere) because it's filtered but has no added minerals like spring water or "nursery" water does. I just fill the bottles all with water at the beginning of the day and leave them on my counter at room temp. Then when it's time for my LO to eat, I pour the formula in and mix it up. No warmer needed, she happily takes it at room temp. But you should not be using tap water, it should be distilled. They sell "nursery" water but that has added minerals as well.
  • The water needs to be at least 70C when mixing as per the world health organization.

Jeez...did you read the detailed instructions? Including wiping down the outside of the bottle when you're done prepping? Who on earth has time for all that? I guess I'm a bad mom but I just make sure my hands are clean, the bottles are cleaned, and the water is straight from the tap (cold).
  • I believe the water needs to be at least 70C to kill off bacteria that could be living in the powder. I think the most important part about bottle feeding is not leaving made up feeds warm for over 2 hours or 1 hour if baby has begun feeding.
  • We just do room temperature nursery water and then mix with the formula powder whenever we need to. We are always on the go so it makes it easy to prep the bottles and then we have the formula in the little dispensers to make it easy to mix whenever we need to make a bottle. This has come in quite handy when we have to do any nighttime feedings. Everyone is different though but this is what works for us.
  • We boil the water and add to the bottles then leave them at room temp all day thought out the day I give my dd room temp at night or in the arvo I give her warmed ones just so she never got used to one type because if your out and don't have access to a heating device... We are in Australia and no chance of just using tap water without boiling it first
