Are you eating cucumbers?

I am aware of how weird this title is! So I just had Greek food including a salad with cucumbers in it and tzaziki sauce. Well now I'm freaking out because I looked it up after and apparently the cucumbers with salmonella WERE distributed in NJ. Should I be super worried? Because I am. :(

Re: Are you eating cucumbers?

  • Ack! I live in NJ & have cucumbers in my fridge now! But after thinking about it, wouldn't a good cleaning get rid of this? I use a vegetable & fruit wash on everything. Plus, I started peeling non organic fruits & veggies if possible. So I think it'll be ok, scary!

  • I take this back, apparently salmonella can get inside the cucumber through the stem! Looks like I'll be throwing mine out just to be safe!
  • No need to freak out. It is likely that the cucumbers to blame for salmonella have long since been removed from store shelves and are out of distribution. If you bought cucumbers a month ago and ate them you were more likely to get sick. But you would know by now if you contracted salmonella though.

I have eaten cucumbers from a restaurant since the outbreak, and was fine.
  • I just get mine from the farmer's market so no salmonella worries for me!
  • I got worried too a few weeks ago but I saw a graph that showed that most people who got sick were in August. Also it's a particular brand of cucumbers. Normally restaurants would have stopped using the culprit cucumbers.
  • Yup. Grown in a personal garden, no worries for me :)
  • I looked more and apparently there have been no illness cases in NJ - even though they are distributed here. Hopefully none of us preggos anywhere have to deal with any of that crap! It's so hard - I try to eat very healthy, and it's always the healthy stuff that you have to worry about getting sick from more!
