Dilation and effacement epidemic

Okay I am due in 2 days I am about 2 cm dialated but my cervix is still kind of high and hard so not really effaced. This is my first baby (after a miscarriage at 12 weeks) I'm just really confused. Is this normal? I feel like I'm going to be pregnant for ever. Everyone thinks I will go into labor today because it's my birthday but I think it will still be awhile. Thoughts? Please and thank you!

Re: Dilation and effacement epidemic

  • Just had a check up. Today is my due date and all I got was a printed snap shot of my cervix and mucus plug. She said maybe next week . My placenta looks good so we're waiting. And waiting.... and... you guessed it... waitIng... it feels like we're both trapped by my body for some reason. But the end has got to come right??

  • With my first on my due date I was 1 cm and really high with no effacement. It stayed that way until I was induced. With my second I was 6 cm and 50% effaced on my due date. I was still pregnant a few more days. Everyone is different. Dilation and effacement really don't tell you anything.
  • Why would it being your birthday (happy birthday btw!) have anything to do with when you go into labor? People say such silly things about having babies sometimes. I bet on the lunar eclipse everyone who's pregnant on earth will be warned about going into labor!
  • Babies are quite often late - I would try (I say "try" because I know it's hard!) to be patient. Things change very fast - you can go from no dilation to go time in a matter of hours - so there really is no telling how much longer it will be. This will be my first baby and I'm currently 40 + 4. My midwife isn't even checking dilation until 41 weeks as she doesn't want to get my hopes up - baby will come when he is ready (or at 42 weeks, when he won't have much of a choice ;) ). Hang in there!! :)
  • PS First deliveries are very, very often late - the average is 9-10 days late! So it could be a little while yet. Or it could be tomorrow! ;)
  • I delivered at 41+1. I had to be induced but after they started the process, my body labored on its own, no need for pitocin or anything :)
My cervix was high, posterior, and I believe I was only 1cm and 40% effaced. The doctors thought I'd have a long induction, but my water broke that day and I had my son the next morning. Your body can change very quickly so I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck!
  • My sister sat at 1 cm dilation for a week.  She went in last Friday (Sept. 11), four days from her projected due date, and her doctor said if nothing progressed, they'd induce her by Sept. 20.

That night, she went into labor.  Had my nephew a week ago, Sept. 12, which actually, coincidentally, IS her birthday. First babies aren't always late.  Being minimally dilated doesn't mean thing can't kick into gear quickly. They sent her back to work on Friday, figuring they'd induce in about a week, and she went into labor about six hours later.
