Slow eater?

My son is almost 6 weeks old but it still takes him over an hour to eat every time and is often awake an hour and a half later hungry again, even when I top him up with expressed milk. He was born at 36 weeks could this be why? How do I speed it up and make sure he's getting enough?

Re: Slow eater?

  • You just have to wait. He's still itty bitty. My first daughter sped up somewhere around 3-4 months and then got crazy alert and distractible and they shortened even more but she wanted to eat more frequently because she wasn't getting as much each time. Also, I was still nursing 12-14 times a day with her at 6 months old, so not every baby ends up going long periods of time in between. Try to follow your little ones lead as hard as that is and try to remember how tiny he is still.

  • Mine is almost 4 weeks old and seems to want to nurse constantly including all through the night. I've tried pumping and bottle feeding but he eats so often it's hard to pump and store a couple bottles to get through the night. Sleep deprivation is starting to get to me. I am about to just give formula at night to help me get a longer stretch even though I really don't want to.
  • Good to know I'm not the only one. Everyone in my parent groups I go to is done nursing in like 15-30 minutes. My LO is 2 months old and still takes 40-90 minutes, the 90 minutes being more growth spurt days/weeks. During the day he'll then want to eat usually 2 hours after finishing. Nighttime is better with 3-5 hours after eating being the norm.
