water broke??!

just woke up thinking that I peed the bed... But once I stood up, a gush of water came out! I'm pretty sure that my water broke!!!

Now I'm wondering what happened next? I have no pain at all and sometimes feel a tightening in my belly like a braxton hick... But again, no pain. My doula says to try and sleep until contractions gets strong, but how long is too long before checking in on this??

  • Im not exactly positive but i think once the water breaks you go in? I was told to walk if i felt contractions but if my water broke to go in
  • Sorry! I forgot to mention... I'm 37+4, so I am in the clear for term delivery.
  • Well then good luck it sounds like baby is on the way!! I've always been told to try to go back to sleep if it's night time because your body will let you know when it's "go time".
  • I've also been told to all of the "rules" my Dr/hospital says to follow about contractions (5 min apart for an hour and pain that I can't walk or talk through) OR if my water broke.
  • Unless you have a history in your family of progressing very quickly after your water breaking, you don't need to go in right away. From the sounds of it things are starting to move along for you but until the contractions get stronger you should be fine to stay home.

My mother's water broke early morning when she was having me and she didn't go in for another 10-12 hours. She even went shopping with my dad before the contractions began to get painful. (It was my older sister's birthday and they were getting a last minute gift for her while she was at school.)

It's actually not uncommon for contractions to wait awhile before starting even after your water breaks. Just keep in mind that once they get painful it is a good idea to make your way to the hospital because they are stronger if your water has broken and you may progress a bit quicker than if it had not.

Just trust your momma instincts. You are about to meet your precious little one, and for that I am so excited for you! You are strong and will make it through this. Congratulations!!!
  • Don't wait too long before going in or at least notifying your doctor! I was told, as several have already posted, to go in when contractions are closer and stronger OR when my water breaks. You don't want to risk infection to that sweet little one you are carrying! Congratulations! I can't wait for you to meet your sweet baby!

P.s. I actually cried reading this thread because I can't wait for us all to meet our precious babies!!! Lol
  • The same thing happened to me yesterday morning, only the fluid kept coming out (and for those of you who were unaware, your amniotic fluid continues to leak the entire time you're in labor, FTM here, so I was shocked to say the least). No pain, but I knew once my water broke I had to go in. I've been admitted for over 24 hours now, still no baby though! You should get there soon to prevent infection. You're considered full term so you should be good! I'm 36+3 and I'm freaking out. Good luck mama!
  • baby probably on the way!! Can you get in to see your doctor?  It wouldn't hurt to go to the hospital you could be checked out and if nothing is happening they will send you home.  Exciting!

  • Good luck, sounds like your baby will be arriving in the next 24 hours.  Definitely call the doctor.  If you can't get a hold of them, go in and get checked.  The worst they will do is send you home for a few hours.

Good luck to @feeohhnaax7 as well!
  • Call the doc. As pp said....I was told to call because once water breaks there is risk of infection.

  • My dr instructed me to go in as soon as my water breaks. As PP said they worry about infection once your water has broke after a certain amount of time.

  • FTM but I checked my sheet and it says to come in once water breaks! Congrats!! Hope you have an easy delivery!!
  • My water broke with my first I had no contractions either but I was told to come in right away since I was + for group b. I also made sure I ate before I went
  • Did you not go into labor? Same thing happened to me Thursday at 330am. I had baby by 3:34pm! She was born at 33w+6d. Water broke and had no pain or contractions. So called the hospital nurse line who then talked to my doctor and said to come in. When I got to the L&D they confirmed my water broke and bc was basically 34 weeks wouldn't stop anything. They checked me and I was 1cm dialated so then brought me to a room and hooked me up. Couple hours later I got contractions, then couple hours later they checked and was 2.5cm so then got the epidural and within two hours I was fully dialated at 10cm. Started pushing at 11:45am and bc she was face up didn't come out until 3:34pm. Last thing I thought that night was I would be a first time mom within 12 hours! So I would def call the hospital from that perspective! like PP said even if not active labor there is risk for infection once water breaks so go sooner than later !
  • Agree with other posters that once your water breaks to go in. If you're like me and already fairly dilated (I'm 4.5-5cm already), labor can start and you can progress very quickly.
