3rd Trimester

Changing doctors

i am 28 weeks. I have decided to change doctors. My question is... I have currently been making payments to doctor of $216 every visit. Do I just lose this money because I am switching doctors or should I ask the doctor if I get any of that back?? I thought that money was for delivery?

Just wanted to see if anyone else had gone thru this?

Re: Changing doctors

  • You'll probably have to talk to your insurance company, as well as both dr offices.

  • I switched when I was 13 weeks because my insurance changed from a PPO to Kaiser (by choice; I quit my job and was on my husbands insurance since we had gotten married a few weeks before I found out I was pregnant.
My co-pay for the entire 40-ish weeks of "prenatal care" was $240 ($5600) without insurance and did not include blood work or US fees. This also did not include hospital fees (dependent on how many nights I would stay). I switched at the end of May and though I have been diligent about calling my old OB's office every other week and have physically gone in there twice since leaving to check on what I was told would be a "pro-rated refund" I haven't seen a dime. Of course I'm going to still bug the office until I'm too pregnant to do anything about it! However, I've just chalked it up to a loss. The $240 we paid in total at around 8 weeks gestation so I'll know to never do that again. In the big picture, we do not really need any of the money back, but it would be nice to have an extra $100 or so.
My old insurance company was absolutely no help.
  • Depends what you were paying the money for... For past/current visits or for the actual delivery up front? I've only been getting bills for past visits..
  • It's called pre paying your deductible. And yes, you should get that money back. Call your doctors office. If they refuse, you can also contact your bank/credit card company regarding the charges.

I'm dealing with the same issue. I was told "if you don't deliver with us, we don't get paid" when I complained about prepaying my deductible. So...I'm not delivering with them. They need to give me the money back.

  • Update: I received a check in the mail refunding me $213 of the $240 we had prepaid for prenatal services through week 40 (or whenever I would've been delivered by that office group). It was a very nice surprise and only took from week 13--when I left that practice--to week 29 to get the refund. Not complaining though because it's over $200 I now have that I chalked up to a loss months ago.
Persistence paid off in my case. I don't have co-pays for regular prenatal visits with my current HMO Kaiser (had a PPO) but I'm high risk with a SUA so I do have to pay for the multiple growth US's and NST's. The hospital fee will be much less with my current insurance than my previous PPO so I guess it's kind of a trade off [-(
