  I did it at 36 weeks with my first. I was uneasy about my OB, but we had a significant disagreement toward the end of my pregnancy and I decided I didn't want him anywhere near me (nothing illegal or anything, just decided it was a step too far).
  I called around to other docs and explained my situation. I got in with a newer OB who was great.
  Explaining threlped a lot, I think. Also, I told them to feel free to call my OB at the time, so nobody wondered if I was somehow pulling a fast one.

  Yes the nurses are the ones primarily with you during labor. But the Dr is the one they are consulting with. So I chose to switch ob at 27 weeks. I liked my first ob but they were part of an office that had many doctors that weren't supportive of med free and were the type to rush things and push interventions. I now go to an office where the whole group has a more hands off approach.

  If you don't think your OB is a good fit, find a different doctor, or a midwife. Although the doctor does very little physically during your birth, the doctor is involved with decisions regarding medication, intervention, and surgery. If your opinions on any of these topics are different from your doctor's preferred way of practicing (outside of an emergency situation), its best to find another care provider.
