I beg your pardon...?

So while I wasn't a petite lady pre-pregnancy, average weight, I thought I was doing a stellar job during my pregnancy. I've only gained 8 pounds so far at 32 weeks and just started wearing maternity clothes 4 weeks ago. I'm by no means dieting! I just wanted to stay active and eat well for baby and to make labor easier since I was already not small. So @ 32wk appointment my doc informs me that since I was a 10 lb baby and DH was upwards of 9 lb that I'm almost guaranteed to have a big baby and "very likely" candidate for a c-section. WTH?!? A little shocked at first but I'm trying to go with the flow. I think now I'm just pissed that I could've been downing Oreos all along and I restrained myself for no reason!

I have no idea why doctors sometimes say the things they say. You are doing a great job preparing yourself for labor. Were both you and your husband c-section babies? Do people in your family tend to struggle with vaginal birth? Large babies can be born vaginally. Obviously, sometimes a c section becomes necessary, but don't let this doctor discourage you before you have a trial of labor.

You may have only gained 8 lbs from pre-pregnancy weight, but you've probably gained overall more than 8 lbs during pregnancy (just lost some of the weight not related to pregnancy and netted it out). So it's entirely possible the baby weighs more than 8 lbs or will by the time you deliver.

That said, weight estimates aren't always accurate especially if they're guessing from US in the third tri. I would talk to your doctor and ask that as long as baby is in proper position and everything is being monitored if you can try for vaginal delivery anyway, if that's what you want.

Staying healthy and active was not in vain! Maybe treat yourself to a couple of Oreos before your due date, but know that you've done yourself and your baby a good thing by making an effort to keep your weight in check and eat healthfully.

Your birth weight has little to do with your children's birth weight ! My sister was 6 lbs at birth at 39.2 weeks and all of her baby's were all 9+ lbs.

According to my midwife, it's mostly about diet. More carbs= bigger baby.

That's not a good enough reason to schedule a c-section if you don't want one. You deserve to at least try for a vaginal delivery. Plus they don't know exactly what size baby will be, you might have a smaller one for all they know.

This exactly! You deserve the right to try instead of having a major surgery that may not be necessary.

My sister in law had her baby last November. He was 10 lbs and she had him with no meds vaginally. Your body can still have a big baby vaginally! (Although... Ouch!) but it can be done

Your doctor sounds like a c section pusher...c sections have their place in this world absolutely and I fully support a woman's right to have one if she wants it just because...but you sound like you want a vaginal delivery so screw that doctor I'd find a midwife to deliver with ASAP

I wasn't trying to be down on anyone- if you gain 50lbs during pregnancy oh well... your body does what it does. And damn it- this pregnancy stuff is hard, if you want a cupcake- have a cupcake!
Doc's take on things just took me by surprise. I will still plan on going with what happens until a c-section is necessary. He just wanted me to be prepared that it was a possibility. Thanks for the advice ladies!

Your doctor obviously has different comfort levels. My great grandmother(yes 40 or so years ago) gave birth to a 13 lb baby vaginally. I was 10lb 4oz. My collar bone was broken, but I was a very healthy baby otherwise. My sister and brother were both 9 lbs and up. Thing is how your body is built. My family we are big boned. We have sturdy frames that can handle that kind of birth. Some women don't have that kind of frame to do it. My doctor is totally cool with whatever size my baby becomes and has never mentioned once a c-section because of baby's size. You can say no and see what happens at delivery. I hope all goes well for you!!!
