3rd Trimester

Contractions

okay , today I'm 40 weeks! Of course I'm a ftm so I'm having a hard time figuring out if I'm having real contractions or if it's false labor contractions .. Okay it's a very bad menstrual cramp in the very lower part of my abdomen it lasts for bout 30secs it's been going on since Monday, my last cervix check. I've done a lil spotting, no heavy bleeding .. So when should I call my doctor? I don't want to make a blank trip to the hospital and it's not real labor ! Help ?

Re: Contractions

  • If the contractions are not in a regular pattern (lasting 1 min long and 5 min apart consistently) then you are not in active labor. Believe me, you will know when true labor begins.

This. There will be no doubt in your mind when you're actually in labor.

  • I went in 3 times before they admitted me with my first. They told me, you'll know you're ready and in labor when you can barely walk or talk and all you want to do is scream. The pain is truly unbareable when you're at the point of needing to go in

See, that's what the nurse told me at my last appointment, but my mom mistook real labor for Braxton Hicks -- not once, but twice (luckily, she happened to be going in for scheduled inductions both times and they were able to get her to L&D).  Makes me really nervous...
  • Oh wow, her active labor only felt like Braxton hicks!? That's crazy!
  • Yeah, I don't know if she was having really intense BH or really easy labors...  Both of her deliveries were over within three hours of arriving at the hospital.
  • I wouldn't go by the ammount of pain. I didn't feel real pain with my labors until 7/8cms. I would time your contractions, and as someone else said if they are about 1 minute in length and every 5 or so minutes go in. If your water breaks or bleeding definitely go in. If you are just unsure call your dr. They can probably get you in to be checked. Good luck !
  • That sounds like how my real contractions were. Like a really bad period cramp. However I never had Braxton hicks. So idk when would be the point to go in if your water did not break naturally. Probably when they are timed and regular like 3-5 minutes apart.
  • With my first baby I didn't feel the contractions I went off my back pain it was unbearable. I had a meeting with my mom that morning but she ended up taking me to the hospital I was 3cm dilated and a 100% effaced so they kept me there they gave me something to make the contractions go faster and I was in labor for atleast 3 hours I had a csection. So when I see things saying to watch the contractions I don't because I don't feel them I go off how much pain I am in.

With my second, it all happened so fast and I waited too long and almost had her in the car. I should have gone in much sooner and took the chance of them sending me home.
  • I agree with what others have said. You'll know a real contraction when you have one. They are so much more predictable than BH's.
  • On the other hand, my contractions never got any closer than 7 minutes apart and they weren't incredibly regular (7 minutes, then 11, then 9, then 10, all over the place) and lasted anything from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. I was definitely in active labor so not all labors are textbook, but there was no mistaking them for BH.
