Nipple soreness

so I had a LC evaluate latch but every time someone evaluates dd2 she latches perfectly. Most times at home she does too but the times she doesn't she has pretty much killed my nipples to the point where there is some callouses at the tips. Milk does not seem to come from those areas when I pump or hand express. DD2 is 5 days old. Is 20 mls good for pumping on the side that is more sore in a 15 min session? Also the Left side which is worse now feels engorged again (suffered with that from end of day 2-3). What can I do to help heal the nipples or is it bad once they get to the point they are calloused.

Re: Nipple soreness

  • 20mls is great for a baby that is only a few days old! Normal pumping after a feeding is 0.5-2oz in place of a feeding 1-4 oz. this early your nipples will be very sore. They might even crack bleed and scab. You can use lanolin cream or coconut oil. You can also squeeze out a little breastmilk and put it on your nipples. Let them air dry.

  • ^totally agree with PP. Hang in there. I swore I actually lost a piece of my nipple and my son had the perfect latch. It will just take some time and it will all be fine. That pain is brutal.
  • It just takes a while to stop hurting. My daughter has a tiny little mouth so it was about a month before her latch stopped hurting. The engorgement also goes away once your body figures out how much milk it actually needs. I would go buy those gel pads from Target and put them in the fridge. After a feeding you can use the lanolin and then stick the gel pads on top.
