FTM here and not sure about this. I googled it but couldn't find an answer and I have a couple of weeks before my next appointment. Does anyone know if I can have an epidural if I'm allergic to Percocet?
Depends on your reaction to percocet and also what type of medication the hospital uses in the epidural. At our hospital we use Fentanyl and bupivicaine which is safe with most codeine - type (percocet) allergies.

That is good to know. I'm definitely going to ask my dr at the next appointment but it started to get me worried bc I know I want an epidural.
Def bring up with doc. I'm anaphylactically allergic to morohine, which is very common in epidural, and they are going to have me see an anesthesiologist towards latter half of pg to talk options. You want to be prepared in advance with a special allergy like that.
Just FYI, one of the main side effects of an epidural is itching. There is even a shot you can ask for during labor to counteract the itch. Don't know how that would play into your allergy.
You may have itching and hives with the epidural (because that is a very common reaction to opioids--they cause histamine release), however you can most likely safely have one. Premedication with Benadryl can help. I'm a hospital pharmacist, and this comes up quite a bit. Unless you had trouble breathing or swelling, most doctors would feel safe giving you fentanyl.

I'm allegergic to morphone too and have been wondering about this. Please let me know if you find anything out about it. I had it once and broke out in hives snd itching from the point of injection. They gave me something st the time to conteract it.

Like pp said if you had hives or itching it is more related to a histamine release and can be managed with drugs like benadryl while still receiving the pain medication. That type of reaction we actually refer to as a pseudo - allergy as opposed to a true allergy (like the pp with anaphylaxis).
@ChristinaAnneW , hey girl. With me I had an anaphylactic reaction which meant my air way was closing etc. So in my particular situation, completely different classes of drugs, in regards to opients/narcotics will need to be used. That's why my doc wants me to see an anesthesiologist to discuss this more in depth. So this biggest thing is to find out if the reaction you are having was histamine response or anaphylaxis type reaction.
I can't even imagine how scary that was/is. I havent discussed any type of plan or options yet with my doctor, I should probably start asking/discussing at my next appointment.
Yeah I don't have any problems with breathing or swelling with it but do break out in hives and itch to the point I make myself bleed. It's good to know they can give me something to help with that bc I really want an epidural bc I'm scared to death of going completely natural.
