Baby Movement

I'm 21 weeks and 2 days and I've yet to feel the baby move. I am overweight. I know being overweight can be a factor. I'm also a FTM. Should I be worried that I haven't felt the baby move yet?

  • I feel like this has been asked a lot lately. Try using the search feature at the top of the screen.

  • I did. I found people talking about their baby moving but not when to worry if you don't feel your baby move.
  • I just started feeling baby move this week..I am 21wks and 4 days..don't panick. I am sure u will feel baby very soon.
  • If you're 21 weeks I assume you've probably had your anatomy scan, they're usually around 20 weeks. If everything was fine then you probably have nothing to worry about, especially if your doctor isn't worried. Sometimes it takes a while to recognize baby movements as what they are, especially for a ftm.
  • I would call your OB and ask your nurse. I think the internet said like 16-22 weeks for FTM, so you are within that range, but your nurse will be able to make you feel better than anything you would read on here I would think...

I think you are in the time frame when most start to feel movement. I'm 24 weeks and the movement is crazy! It just started getting really out of control, but this is also my second pregnancy, so maybe that's why. Is there a nurses hotline for you to call? It's so different between person to person.

  • If you've had your anatomy scan did they mention whether you had an anterior placenta or posterior placenta? That can make it more difficult to feel baby move.

I'm overweight too but I have a posterior placenta and I've been feeling movement since about 17 weeks. If you are concerned call your OB, they might be able to shed some light on the situation or have you come in for a heartbeat listen for some peace of mind.

I'm sorry - I can understand how this can be scary and cause anxiousness.
  • You probably do feel it, you just don't know what it feels like. and I don't know how to explain the feeling. Call your doctor if you are worried
  • I've read that it could be up to 25 weeks before you feel movement. If you are truly worried, I would mention it to your dr. FX your little starts kick boxing soon!!

  • I'm 21 weeks and haven't felt any movement, also a FTM! I'm not worried at all, my anatomy scan was fine and I've read it can be up to 25 weeks before you can feel anything. If you are worried like all PP said, call your doctor.
  • Pretty sure you kinda answered your concern you stated your overweight which is a factor that leads to movement being felt later. I'm 25 weeks and I've been feeling movement since 16 weeks and 2 days & I'm a FTM. Just be patient i agree with others if your doctors aren't concerned then you shouldn't be. If so they'll be the only ones who can really ease your mind.
  • Agree with all other posters. Maybe try chugging a super cold glass of juice and lying on your side or back. I first felt baby lying on my back. Another possibility is that your baby is most active when your asleep, so you don't notice it.
  • I know where you're coming from. I felt the baby this week at exactly 22 weeks. I have an anterior placenta so I knew it might take awhile. It's still really light and sporadic but it's definitely noticeable. I'm sure it'll happen soon :)
  • Agree with pp that the placement of your placenta has a lot to do with it. I have an anertior placenta and only feel my little girl when she's down real low. Lucky for me, she's always kicking me down really low. If she moved or kicked higher I probably wouldn't feel as much. Definitely give your doc a ring and ask to ease your mind.
  • I'm also overweight and thought i wouldn't ever feel them. I'm 24wks now and feel them a lot. The first time I felt anything was very subtle and I was laying on my stomach reading my phone in bed.
The first week I had to put pressure to feel them and feel one more than the other.
My mom said she never felt me and my sister so I thought I might never feel anything, but don't worry. It is hard to not know what is going on in there and I only just started to show in particular outfits, but if dr says baby is doing ok I have to trust.

  • i could feel him fluttering since 19 weeks but around 22.5 I started feeling kicks and now 24.5 he doesn't stop lol don't worry !! u will feel it soon I am also plus size :)
  • Nothing for me yet either, I'm 22 wks and a day. I'm also a first time mom with a anterior placenta I'm not as concerned but I would say I'm impatient I just wanna feel him already lol. I read it could be anywhere from 16-25 wks so hopefully soon for the both of us!
  • I'm 22 weeks and this little girl in me is going to be a kickboxer! But I have two boys as well and with my second son I didn't feel him til 27 weeks! I was
Freaking out. Couldn't wait for every dr. Appt to hear heartbeat and when applied the ultrasound. I remember my doctor telling me it varies with everyone and not to worry! Hang in there!
  • I didn't feel anything until about 22 weeks. Even now, I don't feel anything much except at night, after I have laid down for bed. If I fell asleep quickly, I'd probably never feel LO!
  • I'm overweight as well.. I also have - whatever they call it when your placenta is in the front- it took me awhile to finally be able to feel him move, and there's some days I can't feel him at all.
    I'll be 25 weeks Tuesday.
If you have gone to your anatomy scan they should be able to tell you where your placenta is placed, I don't necessarily think it has to do with your waist size.
Good luck- it's an amazing feeling feeling baby move inside you, and I hope you are able to feel yours move soon.

Ps- I find he's more active when I'm relaxing, still, getting ready for bed..
  • I'm 22 weeks and haven't felt LO move at all. I DO have an anterior placenta so I'm was warned by my OB I probably won't be feeling movement for a while now. But I would say as long as you've done your anatomy scam and OB is content that everything is fine you should be too!
  • My doctor said for FTMs, it can sometimes happen a lot later. The NP said she didn't feel it until week 26. I really only started feeling it at about 22. Now, there is no question that is what it is, and I can see movement from the outside, too.
