Multiples Check-in 9/18/15

Hello everyone! I think we are about due for a check in so here we go. This past week has been super busy with school and work and so my sleep has been affected. I'm just not sleeping well. The other night I fell asleep around 9:30pm and was up by 11:30pm and didn't fall back to sleep till after 3. Then had to be up for work by 5. That was a rough day. My back has also been hurting really bad and my Dr says it's only going to get worse. I have one of those body pillows and it helps, somewhat, but with having a desk job and my long commute, there really isn't much to do. My appetite is picking up. It's been rare for me to crave anything but yesterday I wanted chili cheese fries and I wanted to make them myself so I did and they were so so so good!! I will be 23 weeks on Saturday and have already gained 25 lbs. Yep, you read that right. A big ole 25! My Dr isn't concerned and said I shouldn't be either. My belly measured at 24 weeks. This was from my appointment on 9/14/15. Babies are still head down and they've been that way for a long time now. I just ordered some cloth diapers and inserts and will be going to the baby exchange this weekend to see what I can find. Still trying to decide which stroller and car seat to get. I swear it is so hard lol or maybe I'm making it more difficult that it needs to be. Other than that, things are going very well. Babies are moving A TON!! Especially my little guy. Our little girl is more mellow and moves more late at night and early in the mornings. I'm super anxious and can't wait for them to get here.

Congrats! I will be 23 weeks on Monday with twins myself. Expecting a boy and girl as well. I wouldn't be too concerned with your weight gain, I have gained 20 pounds and I'm measuring at 27 weeks. Just think about they're weight, as long as their both growing well that's all that should matter. Remember you are carrying 2 :) Sleeping is becoming more difficult for me as well. I find it more comfortable to sleep propped up on my back then laying flat on my side. The thing that's really bothering me is the round ligament pain. It actually takes my breathe away at times and makes me feel like my uterus is tearing. Have you experienced any of these pains? Maybe it's because they are growing so fast. Both twins 1lb already.

  • Can you feel which baby is which? Having two girls and I assume each kicks on their own side, but not sure since at last US they said they were laying on top of each other. Maybe after Monday (my next US) they can tell me postion so I can tell better. I definitely feel kicks on each side.
22 weeks here. Haven't checked weight since last appointment, but my belly sure is growing! I had gained total of 5 lbs last time but I am sure it's more now. Amazing how much faster my belly has grown than with previous two pregnancies. I think that must be why the round ligament pain is so much worse--body just can't adjust that fast!
Getting ready to do my boys' room (they've been in separate rooms but have to make room for sisters) and then we will do nursery. Such a fun and exciting time!
  • Hi all, I'm 24 weeks this week! I've gained 22 pounds so far, mostly tummy but also spread over my whole body. I'm still getting to the gym a few times a week and eating well with some indulgences like ice-cream thrown in. Not really concerned about the weight gain and Dr is happy with me. When you are talking about how big you're measuring are you talking about your uterus? Because at 23 weeks my uterus was measuring 30 weeks.
I'm loving feeling big kicks, my whole stomach moves with them at times. I'm just guessing who is kicking based on their positions, for the last 2 ultrasounds they've been side by side in breech. I had back pain on tuesday so bad that I was couch bound all day, not being able to take real medication sucks! I haven't had much round ligament pain lately which is good.  I've got my glucose tolerance test in 2 weeks and another 3D scan in 4 weeks. Looking forward to seeing babies again!
I have not done much in terms of putting together a registry -last weeks shopping expedition was a huge fail! The lady in the shop just kept directing us to the website for pricing and when I asked about doing a package for 2 cots and a cupboard, she took us over to a cot and briefly went through the features of that one cot and asked if we had any questions before leaving us. I was also hungry/angry by then end!!
This weekend we have the multiples baby class today, then tomorrow I'm working a half day at the hospital followed by an engagement party. Tired just thinking about it!
  • Hello all. I'm 22 weeks with di/di girls. I gained the 6 pounds I lost back and possibly 5 on top of that. No one seems conserved. At 20 weeks both measured around 11 ounces. They move quite a bit but u still can't feel thwm on the outside. I rub thwm often as it is very easy to feel them. Next appt is 10/2.
  • Just thought I would share some tips from the multiples class - if you're planning on breastfeeding get a good nursing pillow and double breast pump to help with increasing breast milk production, time saving to feed both at once and wake them at the same time (unless you know one baby can sleep through and miss a feed). Also, they said when you're about to feed set yourself up with water, a snack and have your phone near by. If you're using disposable nappies, you'll go through about 1 box of huggies a week. Something interesting was twins that are put next to each other are better at regulating their body temp, which might be more applicable for you ladies giving birth in winter -although SIDS don't recommend putting them next to each other.
They also took us to NICU which was a little confronting!
  • Are any of you guys going to do maternity photos? If so, when?
  • I was considering doing some but have decided against them since my husband isn't here. We will take family photos after the babies are born. I take my weekly photos of my belly so I'm happy with those. I did read that twin pregnancies are normally taken around 30 to 32 weeks since they tend to deliver early.

  • Twin mom lurker here again!

I breastfed my girls until 15 months, when this pregnancy made it too hard. And they lost interest. The Brest Friend nursing pillow is the most popular and most supportive (holds babies up higher), but I prefer the Twin Z pillow because it isn't made from toxic foam. I had both pillows.

Get a hospital grade double pump. I didn't know until too late, but in the US if you get a prescription fromyour doctor, insurance will cover it. Your hospital can probably lease you one. I had the madela symphony. Also get a pumping bra. I loved mine. I think the brand is simple wishes or something like that. You can find them on Amazon. They're super adjustable.
  • @mg137 I love love that you "lurk" into our group and post because you have been where we are so you are best at giving up advice and your thoughts. I appreciate it and welcome you to jump in any time you want. I never knew there was such a thing as a pumping bra so thank you for letting me know. I'll definitely be doing what I can to get a breast pump through my insurance. That's awesome you were able to nurse your babies for so long. I went 13 months with my son and hoping to at least make a year with my twins.

  • 24 weeks with di/di girls and I love feeling them kick and move! I have anterior placentas and I'm overweight so I've been waiting patiently for these kicks. :) My girls are side by side (but flipped) so I can almost always tell who is doing what. I definitely feel one more than the other but I think it's because her legs/arms still hide behind her placenta. The other's legs are down low and I can feel those right now!

We bought the stroller on Friday - I had been waiting for it to go on sale at BRU and patience pays off! It's the Contours Options tandem stroller, and I bought the extra infant seat adapter. I liked that once they're in the regular seats we have the "options" (get it? haha) to have them face each other.

I've been sleeping alright, but I have to switch sides all night and occasionally wake up on my back. It's probably frustrating for husband but I've yet to hear him complain!

And I will definitely not be doing maternity photos. I'll admit this is the best I've ever felt about my body but I'm still not comfortable with the idea of a photoshoot. Husband just wants to take some photos to document how big my belly is getting!

How far along will you guys be when you stop working? I'm planning on trying to make it to late October then going on sick leave until mat leave. I'm a home care nurse and I do a little bit of physical work (nothing terrible, but enough), and I find I'm losing my compassion. I get so irritable and the long shifts are exhausting!
  • I'm not doing maternity photos, but I would like to get at least one nice one of my husband and I showing my belly.

I only worked 4hrs yesterday (standing/walking mostly) then stood at an engagement for 4hrs and my feet are so swollen!! They are still swollen today :( has anyone else had swelling?

@Theliops that's so exciting you're feeling them kicking! I think yesterday will be my last day of work, and only because I work contract/part time and wasn't offered any work until later in oct/nov and couldn't commit to it due to 1hr travel each way and just not knowing how I will be. Hopefully your job is understanding and you can just take leave once you need to.

@mg137 thank you for lurking! I love hearing about your experience! Thanks for the name of that pillow, I haven't found a version here in Australia that looks as good as that one.

  • I plan to go on maternity leave the first week of Dec. My Dr says I'll most likely deliver the last week of Dec and I get 4 weeks prior. I really want to not go back after thanksgiving so I'm considering using whatever vacation time I have for that period. I'm with you @Theliops I'm losing my compassion and passion for my job. My mind is constantly on my babies and preparing for them. Everything else doesn't matter much anymore.

  • 22 week ultrasound. Each girl weighing approximately a pound. So exciting seeing them. :)

  • @theliops : I also bought the Contours tandem options stroller. I got mines in red. I was considering get this and the baby trend snap n go stroller until I realized that the contours stroller can actually facilitate car seats as well.
As for the car seats I haven't bought those yet but I'm considering getting the Embrace Evenflo XL. It's supposedly compatible with the contours as are many other brands.

Some family friends made my husband and I a gift of the Table for two dining chair. Looks like it will be very handy when multi tasking to feed the babies.
  • I got the Contours Options Tandem Stroller as well. I did read that it can be a bit cumbersome for use for errands with the car/trunk, so I also purchased a secondhand Joovy Twin Roo stroller for that purpose.  We are getting Chicco Keyfit 30 carseats, and had to get the old Joovy model for them to be compatible.  Worked out well price-wise.

I am hoping to work until I give birth.  Is that totally unrealistic? I work a low stress office job so I am hoping to save my time.

Babies are kicking away and I LOVE it.  I often find myself somewhere like at the copier at work and feel a kick and I am just so happy/reminded of the fact that two little BABIES are growing inside of me.  Crazy! And amazing.

I am experiencing really uncomfortable pain in my left ribs for a couple of weeks now.  It is dull aches sometimes and others, sharp shooting pains.  Anyone else experiencing anything similar?

My husband and I were baby shopping this past weekend and I saw a woman the exact same size as me. The sales clerk asked when she was due and she said the last week in October. Ha!

  • Hi - I'm new to this group :) I'm 23 weeks with Fraternal twin girls. Feeling a lot of movement which is very uncomfortable and borderline painful, having massive trouble sleeping and major leg cramps. In other words, not loving the process but loving my little miracles. Girls are about a pound each and I've gained 26 lbs & my Dr. Says I'm right on track and the equivalent of 28 weeks with one.

Two different preggy pillows later I'm still not comfortable sleeping. Any suggestions are helpful!
  • Hi all,
Haven't checked in in a while. I'm officially out on disability this week at 24 weeks. I've had high blood pressure and babies are measuring big. I was working about 70 hours a week, on my feet for at least 10 hours a day, and I don't think my body could handle it. Going part time wasn't an option :( My due date has been moved up a week to January 14th. They won't let me past 38 weeks though, so they'll probably induce me end of December. How's everyone else feeling?
Has anyone else had a discussion with their doctor about how long they'll let you go?

Congrats on your twin girls! Did you know that same sex twins in different sacs and placentas can still be identical? My doctor and tech told us we were having fraternal too and ended up having them tested at 4.5 months because they still looked so much alike...turns out our di/di 2.5 year old girls are identical! Happens pretty frequently ;)

There's hadn't been talk of an induction date but my dr wants me to deliver at the end of Dec. My due date is Jan 16th.
Disability so early but I can understand with 70 hour work week. Hope you can get some rest.

  • I'm definitely getting rest! We didn't talk about an exact date either. I'm just hoping babies cook till they're done! :)
  • @ Twindling: that is so amazing. Did you have two placentas or one? I have two sacs and one placenta and my OB says it's a good chance that I could have identical girls. Super excited to see the outcome.
  • Really? That's so cool! I have two placenta - one in front & one in back. Do you think it still happens?
  • Lurker again. My di di girls are identical. We had their DNA tested by doctor office at 9 months old. It's a common misconception that all twins that have their own sacs and placentas are fraternal, but if identical twins split early enough, they'll grow their own.

If your twins are the same sex and you conceived naturally, I don't think there's any way to know for sure that they're fraternal before birth. Once they're born sometimes doctors can tell by inspecting the placentas (if this was done with ours the report was lost). Otherwise it's just looking for differences like blood type or totally different somethings. I'll warn you, though, parents of identical twins seem to always think they're fraternal. Even now when people ask how I tell them apart, I'm like, "Umm. Because they're totally different!" :) I always thought identical twins were kind of creepy but I'm a total convert. It's so so neat seeing how different they are even though they're so similar. They're these little magical things that parents of only singletons could never really understand. It's going to be really neat for us to see how this new baby compares since identical twins is all we know.
  • P.S. My placentas were on totally opposite sides. Looking at an ultrasound image, you'd see one in the top right and the other in the bottom left. The only thing that gave my doctor pause was that the membrane between the sacs looked a little thin, but the structural ultrasound doctor, who is supposed to be one of the best in the country, was nearly certain they were fraternal.
  • If egg splits before day 3, you can have two sacs and two placentas and still have identical twins. Chances are higher fraternal, but identical very possible. If you have one placenta, they are identical and it split after day 3.
  • Exact same as @mg137 ;) two sacs, two placentas on opposite sides. I'm still in denial that my girls are identical.
