A question for mama's w/pets

I have a 5 year old Chihuahua who has always been very protective of me since I got him in May. I'll be 37 weeks tomorrow. Recently he has started peeing all over my bed anytime he manages to get into my room when I'm not around. We have 2 other dogs and a cat as well but he is the only one who is marking. I've been closing my door anytime I am not in there but sometimes it isn't closed tight or I forget if I just go out to the living room. And he goes and pees again! He is 100% house trained and has never done this before. He only pees on my bed/pillows and no where else. Did any other mama's have this problem while they were expecting and if so did you ever find a remedy for it? I don't want to have to overthink about leaving my room everytime.

  • Is there anything in particular that has changed around the time he started doing that?

I haven't had that specific problem but my cats have been very weird and protective at the end of both of my pregnancies. One of them right now is driving me nuts the last couple weeks because she's always under my feet and curling up by my bump making me hot. The behaviors went away pretty quickly Once we brought baby home last time. Hopefully they will this time, and hopefully yours will too. We are already getting vigilant about keeping our door shut because that is where baby will sleep once here though.

Should take him to the vet to rule out any medical issues like a bladder/kidney problem.
  • As soon as I started moving baby's stuff in he did. I figure it's just because of all the new smells and he senses change but it's driving me crazy!
  • Pets can tell when we are pregnant. It's most likely not a medical issue but behavioral. He sees things changing around the house, notices the changes in you and is acting out. You may not notice but you might be spending more time away from him, shooing him out of the babies room or things. All this change is a lot for our fur babies and it may take some time for it to stop. I have been taking my pets out on little outings. Going for walks, drive thrus, dog parks, outdoor malls, etc... I keep them involved in the baby stuff, let them hang out while we built the furniture, while I fold clothes and decorate. Dogs like having jobs and feeling important, without these things they tend to act out. Try going on little outings with him, have just you and him time, involve him in the nursery, get him a toy or treat. Best thing is just to keep him busy and happy.
  • My cat was spraying alllllll of my stuff! I took her to the vet and she said it was behavioral, I'd almost given up hope, but one day I just picked her up and talked to her about the baby and how she was going to be a big sister and I swear from that moment on she hasn't sprayed! We also have cuddle time everyday :) I honestly think she just needed a little extra attention.
  • Big changes can cause our pets to stress just like we do. He might be acting out as a way to get more attention or he could be using it as a comfort strategy. Dogs can find comfort by hiding their scent in ours. Our beds carry out scent more than anything so perhaps that's why he's only peeing there.

We went through a very similar stage with our dog early in my pregnancy. We had also just moved so there was a lot of new changes for him to get used to. Like PP said, try involving him in baby things or at least let him know he's welcome to be around. We made the mistake of shooing our dog out all of the time but found that he quickly came around as soon as we started including him more.

It's good practice to start giving them more attention than we usually do and to definitely keep it up once our babies come along. That way you can hopefully prevent any jealousy from happening.

Hopefully this helps! It's definitely an annoying stage but it doesn't last forever. Hang in there!

  • I think your dog knows there a major changes about to happen. He seems stressed and the peeing might be him doing it out of stress and to mark his territory. He will be having a hard time once baby arrives. Have a look online in how to prepare pets for new arrivals. We are facing the same issue. We have three dogs. Luckily no major issues yet, but they are our babies now. So I am not sure how they will react once I get my actual baby home.
  • I have a pug x cav he is toilet trained also and he knew I was pregnant before I was, he starting acting out and peeing and stuff then found out I was pregnant. My dog also was peeing on my side of the bed and stuff I've just made sure I've caught him in the act, it has stopped him from doing this. Just try and keep an eye on him my dog has stopped doing this until the other night when he did it when I was sleeping. So once again I'm watching him
  • Thank you all so much! Glad that my pup isn't the only one stressing. Ill be giving him some extra loves and see if that helps any. (:
  • DH and DD brought home a kitten 4 months ago. This little thing stole my heart and was perfect, playful and cuddly. In the last week he has turned into this little terror that meows, bounds around and demands a ton of attention...it's driving me nuts!!! Still love the little guy but omg. Could this kitten know a baby is on the way? Seems a bit weird seeing as he is so young and hasn't known me anything other then pregnant.

    Anyway just a pet rant...
  • Our dog has been very aware of the baby and seems pretty great about it. Admittedly I have talked to her about it. I will say that she hasn't gotten as much attention and exercise- partially because i'm tired and largely because she hurt herself at the beginning of summer and wasn't allowed to run and play. She's 9 and hasn't acted out too terribly about the lack of exercise, but she does get irritable and we've tried to be much better about attention. She does snuggle me a lot and there are no other pets in the family vying for attention.

I can see in a younger dog already competing for time with mommy how new baby stuff would be the last straw. Definitely think about whether yours has been lacking in attention or play time.

How old is your kitten? At about 5 or 6 months old both our cats when through a crazy phase like that.

My oldest cat will be 7 soon, he has been cuddly, which is so not like him. In fact, I've refered to him as a velcro cat lately.
  • I have two dogs and one of them does this except she pees on my couch. Thankfully I keep a couch cover over it. She has been banned from the couch and I've gotten her a dog bed that she can lay in when we watch TV. I think for us, she senses change and it causes anxiety for her. I also haven't been spending as much time with her due to getting things ready for the baby. On days I'm home from work, I never have a problem. Its when I leave or I'm not sitting down for the majority of the day. I also put her in a crate when I cant watch her all the time. Sounds cruel, but its actually helped. She now goes there willingly to sleep and eat. My other dog is being super aggressive. I'm wondering if its because she can sense the baby because she was my good baby before lol She mainly slept and cuddled. Now she barks constantly and when you try to pet her, she growls. Makes me a little nervous for when the baby comes. She's not spayed, so I'm wondering if by doing that it will make her calm down a bit.
  • Ya kitten is about 5 months old. Just about time to get him fixed too, so maybe all that kitty testosterone is pent up. I caught him at the top of two different window screens yesterday! So today I went and bought him a few new toys and a handheld laser pointer and he has been playing non stop for like 2 hours with the toys.

This kitten is reminding me how busy toddlers are I guess haha.
