IKEA Nursery Furniture?

My husband and I are looking for quality, affordable furniture for our nursery. We already have a crib, but need a dresser/changing table, glider chair, and possibly a chest of drawers. Most places we have looked are out of our budget. Does anyone have any experience with IKEA? Is their furniture solid wood, good quality, etc? Any input would be appreciated!

Re: IKEA Nursery Furniture?

  • We plan to do all our nursery furniture from IKEA. We've always been pleased with the quality and have several pieces in our house that we've used for years and hold up well. For the price I think they are much better than flat pack furniture from other stores!

  • We bought both our cribs and our changing table from ikea. We were able to see them put together in the store, so we could verify the quality and we are really pleased. Very solid construction and inexpensive. I definitely recommend!

  • The Hemnes dressers are wonderful for children's rooms. Solid wood and they fit a ton. For our first two babies we used their Gulliver crib, and I intend to purchase another for this baby.
  • I've used ikea for various furniture purchases for my house and it's always been very sturdy, and seemingly good quality. I intend to get one of their poang chairs. One of the best chairs ever!
  • I'm a ftm so no personal experience but Baby Bargains recommends IKEA as one of the good quality, cheaper options. :-)
  • Craigslist! I got some great deals on furniture second hand! I paid very little for it and spruced it up with some kid and pet friendly furniture paint. I think it's really worth it if you have a little time to put into it. IKEA is also good though if you want something sturdy and affordable.
  • I'm pro-Ikea! We bought the cribs, a Hemnes dresser, a Poang rocking chair, and one of those kitchen carts for diapers and diaper accessories!

We're also in the process of switching a lot of our older living room furniture to Ikea stuff.

We like to see stuff in the showroom first before we buy it, but haven't had a bad experience with their stuff yet! In Canada there aren't many options for furniture shopping, unless you can send thousands of dollars and go to somewhere like Leons or The Brick.
  • I love IKEA. Since the cost is so low, the pieces are usually made with a softer wood than something really upscale.
They may ding or nick, but they certainly won't fall apart.
My one warning is that their shipping can be outrageous! You may be able to find a higher quality piece at the same price, once you factor in shipping. If you're close enough to get to an actual store, though, have at it!

Also, check out all the websites on IKEA hacks. They can take something that looks cheap-y, and repurpose them and make them look designer. It's kind of an obsession of mine, and if we were closer to an IKEA, and had a bigger car, I'd be there a LOT.

I love ikea, period. If we needed to buy a crib we would definitely be getting it from there (DH's SIL is giving us hers). My friend has a crib from ikea and she loves it.

  • All my baby's nursery furniture is from IKEA and I absolutely love it! Excellent quality for really good price I've attached a couple of Pic's
  • Some IKEA stuff is crap and some is great. We are getting our crib and dresser/changing table from there. Just PLEASE anchor your dresser to the wall. Dressers should be anchored regardless but the IKEA ones tip really easily.
  • My "open closet" and tall dresser are both Ikea. Very happy so far! The hanging shelf is a Lack shelf with a Bygel (sp?) rail attached and a row of Trones below. Very inexpensive but nice looking (I think) open storage.

I love Ikea... BUT do not get the POÄNG Rocking chair. We got this for DS and I wish I ha bought a glider or a lazyboy instead. It does not rock well and isn't comfy for nursing or feeding.

I still have it, it is pretty durable. We use it in DS's room for reading to him at bed time. He uses it as well. It's just a terrible nursing/ rocking to sleep chair.

ETA we didn't have an ikea near us at the time. I asked MIL to pick one up for us so I never tested it.
  • Thank you all so much for the input!

The tricky thing for us is that we live 4 hours away from an IKEA and probably won't be able to make that drive anytime soon to see the showroom, so we would be purchasing without first seeing the item in person.

I found an AWESOME company where I live that makes regular trips to IKEA to pick up purchases made by locals and charges only $30 for delivery! Send life a great solution if the furniture is worth it.
  • I will agree with PP's that the Hemnes line of dressers/chest of drawers etc is really nice and made of solid wood. It's pine, but it's hard to get something else of that quality in that price range.  We have a set of the largest ones for our bedroom and they've made it through 3 years and a move so far good as new.

Also: changing tables from IKEA are not the standard size. They are much smaller. One of my friends bought one and while it was great for a newborn, she had to sew a special changing pad for it (she didn't realize she needed to buy the ikea one) and her one year old daughter is too big to fit on it.  You're better off getting something like one of the lower Hemnes dressers and putting the changing pad on top or getting a changing table from another store.

I can't speak much on their other dresser lines or products.  It's unfortunate that you can't get to a store, because the quality does tend to vary with the price point a bit.  There are certainly some really nice affordable products there though. We're actually about to buy some Hemnes bookcases and kitchen cabinet tomorrow because they're so much nicer than what we could afford at local furniture stores.
  • Note: Their website can be a little tricky to manage, but under the picture of the item you can click on the Product Information tab (it's weirdly hidden by coordinating products when you first get to the page).  They should have the dimensions of each product and list what materials were used to make the product.  If having solid wood is important to you, that's a good way to check which lines have it and which don't.
