May have been exposed to pesticides and super worried!

I'm really nervous, I'm 7 weeks pregnant and yesterday my family and I were at a farm picking tomatoes to make our homemade sauce. It didn't occur to me until I was there that I could be exposed to chemicals and pesticides. I was there for about an hour. I read online that exposure to such things during the first trimester (especially during weeks 3-8) can cause neural defects. Should I be worried? I'm so worried and scared. Couldn't sleep at all last night!

You're like me after eating farm raised salmon the other night. Farmers have healthy children all the time. Think about all of the people who work in fields, women included, picking fruit and vegetables. There's a whole population out there exposed to the same sort of environment you were in, and yet we've seen no warning that women who work in fields should avoid being pregnant. You were there for an hour. These women are there day after day. Deep breaths. :)

  • It seems to don't need to worry too much. Everything I've read says exposure to large amounts of pesticides while pregnant (like, you live downwind from a farm that regularly sprays their crops) is what's particularly dangerous. I assume you washed your hands or took a shower at some point after tomato picking, so any trace amounts of pesticide should be gone. We all come in contact with this low level just in our homes, so I wouldn't worry too much!

Good point! Thank you! Were you terrified after you at that farmed fish? And what calmed you down?

Yes I did wash my hands and took a shower as soon as I got home! Did you come across reading about pesticides or were you also concerned and looked it up?
  • @BabyBliss2012 I've actually never been concerned about pesticides as the only exposure I ever have is from the grocery store (and my OB hasn't told me to stop buying produce yet ;) ) I just wanted to answer your question with some type of scientific fact behind it so I did a little research. You really have nothing to worry about!
  • I had a similar worry during my first pregnancy when I gave my dogs a bath with flea and tick shampoo - I was so worried/panicked about it. I just kept reminding myself that drug addicts and alcoholics get pregnant and deliver normal babies all the time. A one time exposure most likely will not cause harm.
  • @twinmom3221 thank you for bringing up that point! Are you having twins this time or do you already have twins?

I used so much energy crying and freaking out that I had none left to care the next day. I ate 4 ounces of fish. If that's what breaks a pregnancy, then I have no idea how women have healthy pregnancies. :)

@BabyBliss2012 I already have twins - this time there is only 1 baby in there! I made the u/s tech check multiple times... Not sure I could handle twin newborns again.. Although I wouldn't change it for the world!

I'm sure the redidue levels if u were picking the tomatoes are super low if not undetectable. The risk from the type of exposure you describe seem minuscule
