October 2015 Moms

NST = Hell (Rant)

I have been getting weekly NST and AFL checks since 32 weeks. I am due October 26 (34w2d). My DD is not cooperative at all. My appointments last hours and I am exhausted and in pain at the end of each one. DD hates the monitor and kicks, rolls, punches, and whatever else she can do to get away from it. The nurse literally had to hold the sensor and chase her around to get any real reading. I also have to lay flat on my back because it helps force her towards the front on my uterus. While I am on my back my BP drops, I get nauseous, light headed, and nearly pass out. My body goes through so much stress that I start having strong painful contractions that force me to stay and be monitored. After all that I still have to get an ultrasound to check amniotic fluid levels. Should be quick and easy but no. I once again have to lie on my back and baby doesn't cooperate plus the placement and shape of my uterus/ placenta make it hard to measure all 4 quadrants. Of course when they want DD to move, she won't.
Every week I get to go through this until I deliver and starting at 36 weeks they want me to get it done twice a week.
Anyone else going through so much trouble during a NST??

  • I am, LO Hayes being monitored as well . I am a bit on the heavier side so I have to recline all the way back and hold the monitor on my belly and move it around if LO freaks out. Last week I almost failed bc baby was sleeping and not being reactive, same thing with the us baby just fell asleep and I was there forever! Not to mention that my bp has slowly been creeping up the past couple of times. I am 37 weeks 2 days and I'm over the 2x a week nst

  • I would definitely talk to your doctor about that. With all of that struggle, I would wonder if they are even getting an accurate reading of what they are looking for.

    Are you going in for them at the same time of day each week? Since babies have different activity levels different times of the day, maybe going at a different time would have a different result?

    My NSTs with my daughter would take forever sometimes and we laugh now because at three years old she has the same personality. They would need to record a certain number of movements within an hour and she would move a ton in the first 5 minutes, but then would wait a whole hour to move again, which would start the process all over again.
  • I have had 2 a week since 33 wks. Something happens every single time. I almost had an emergency cs because my babe pinched her cord and didn't come back up right away, I have GD and they will make me drink OJ to get her moving, which works and spikes my sugar but then the readings are awful because she moves away from the monitor. My shortest NST was an hour long.
  • I get weekly NST and ultrasounds as well and they're awful :( my twins can never be found in my doctors office so I always get sent to L&D then they roll all over the place when they are found there. I have to hold the monitor to my stomach. It's just all around an uncomfortable experience.
  • Unfortunately they are definitely necessary. I have had one emergency c section because of decelerated heart rate and one early c section because of reduced amniotic fluid. I have type 1 diabetes and a plethora of things making this pregnancy high risk.

    That sucks.  I'm getting weekly NST because I'm over 35 and it's really uncomfortable.   And my doctor always lectures me I'm dehydrated and having contractions even though I drink a ton of water.  I'm going to drink 2 gallons of water tomorrow before my appointment. lol...  but I guess if you have medical concerns it's good that they are watching your baby so closely.  Hang in there momma!

  • I get them weekly but they don't make me lay flat. I am always reclined or they have even let me lay on my side. I have found that the frozen strawberry lemonade from McDonald's gets him going every time...lol. I only have to lay there for 30-40 minutes.
  • I hear you, they are horrible! It also depends on who the tech/nurse is cause some for then are such jerks. You don't have a ton of control but I would ask them what they are looking for so you at least know better when it might end. For example my dr wants at least 10 minutes with two movements in that time and heart rate to go at least 10 above baseline once. Also, I would refuse to lay flat period because of how uncomfortable it's making you.
