All about the Eats !

So as a first time mommy I had a very frustrating breastfeeding start & sometimes think I took on more than I can handle. But, I still haven't given up.

I have some questions as a rookie mommy though. My little guy is 3w2d old...

How old is your baby & how often does he/she eat?
Does your baby eat on schedule or by demand?
How much does your baby eat if it's expressed milk? OR how long if it's nursing?

Im just asking for the mamas who are breastfeeding.

Thanks #-o

Re: All about the Eats !

  • Baby is 6 weeks, eats on demand( at the beginning it was every 2h now it is 3-4hours). Eats 20 minutes each boob during the day and around 12minutes each boob at night. I pump 3-4 times during the day. If I pump right after the feeding I usually get 1.5-2 oz between two boobs, but sometimes i pump an hour after the feed and I get 2-3.5 oz. if I give him pumped bottle he would eat 3 oz.

  • My LO hit a growth spurt around the three week mark she would eat about 4-5 oz at a time if we were using a bottle and it seemed like she want to stay on the boob all day! Hang in there, it gets way easier around five weeks and it all feels worth it:)

I nurse on demand, so it's pretty frequent. She can down anything from 1-4 oz every 1-5 hours. She goes longer between feedings at night.

ETA: LO is 9 weeks old.
  • Feed on demand. Baby is 5 weeks and pretty much every 2 hours still during the day. Feeding takes about 20 mins. During night we usually start with a 4 hour stretch followed by every 2-3 after that.

  • LO is 5 1/2 weeks. Eats on a schedule every 3 hours. It was about 12-15 min per side but he's getting more efficient and it's about 9-11 min now per side. He eats once in the MOTN.
  • It depends on the day. Yesterday she ate every hour from 7am until 5pm and acted like she was dying of starvation. Other days it's every 2-3hrs during the day. She eats 1-2x a night depending on whether she sleeps a 6-7hr stretch or only 4hr stretches. DD is one month old today.

  • DD is 5 weeks. I feed on demand and it can vary day to day. A typical day for us is eating about every 2 hours (again her demand, no schedule). Some days it seems its closer to every hour to hour and a half (this happens about once a week). Almost every night ahe starts to cluster feed somewhat before bed. At night we typically get a 4 or 5 hour stretch and then have a MOTN feed, but we have had about 3 times where she STTN and I include tonight as one as she slept from 915 to 415. During the day a session can last anywhere from 20 to 60 mins and I just try to make sure she nurses each side since she still nurses so long. Typically ill nurse about 10 to 15 mins each side with a burp in between. At night she usually feeds 15 to 20 mins on one side and then goes back down and I pump the other side before going back to bed. When I pump one side in the MOTN like that I usually get about 3oz from one side.
  • My LO is also 3weeks, 2 days and can eat anywhere from 1-3hrs during the day (feed times are almost an hr long). Due to my poor supply, I'm only able to pump about 2oz all day so she gets this at night in a bottle (as well as a little feed on the breast). I then have to wake her every 3-3.5hrs at night to eat.. She's a great night sleeper but due to poor weight gain, I have to continue waking her every few hrs. I may need to start supplementing formula if she's not gaining enough next appt (she goes every 4-5days for weight checks).
