awake and content?

FTM here, with what might be a silly question. My LO is two weeks old...and so far, she seems to have only two modes when awake--either crying or nursing:) I'm guessing that's pretty normal, but I'm wondering how much time your babies spent at this age awake and content (when they weren't eating). I get 5 minutes here and there (esp. If we walk around the backyard--she loves the outdoors), but that's about it! I sure do love those times when I can interact with her when she's not on the boob. (She usually falls asleep while nursing).

Re: awake and content?

  • At that age I got pretty much zero content awake time....

  • I didn't start getting content awake time until probably a week ago. LO is six weeks now and I'm finally able to start getting some reactions out of him.
  • I had maybe ten minutes a day at that age. Now at 6 weeks, I get quite a bit more content awake time. Maybe around 2ish-3ish hours in a day...?

  • The five week mark started the awake and happy/content phase for us as well. Brighter days ahead mama!!
  • My LO had awake and content time since she was born (actually came out like this) but lately, she's been getting fussier and going longer times awake. She still has awake and content time but her fussy time is def increasing. Makes me feel like I'm missing something.
  • DS2 (5 weeks) has had some since about 3 weeks though its getting longer.  He loves to lay on his activity mat but his favorite is just sitting up in my lap.  He does okay for tummy time but gets frustrated after awhile.

LO is 4 weeks tomorrow, I'm going through this too.
  • Thanks for the replies, ladies. Sounds like I just have to wait a few more weeks!
  • Fair warning, mine definitely went through a difficult awake period before she got to this content period. For awhile, it felt like all she did was sleep, cry, eat. We are having much more fun now. I've been warned we will go through several periods of fussiness.

  • Mine is 7 weeks and is content maybe 30 mins a day. It's so exhausting. Hoping it gets better soon.

  • Mine is 4 weeks and it's been rough! It is exhausting @dkizz82 ! Feels like an endless cycle...Hoping it gets better too :)
  • FYI about 4.5 to 5 weeks is when babies go through their first leap in mental development so irritability is definitely normal! After that things tend to get easier! :) wonder weeks app is super useful to know when a fussy period is about to start and why.
  • It felt like my first baby did that for months. It was probably only weeks but it felt like forever - she hardly slept and was always cranky. It was truly draining. DD mellowed around 6 weeks. DS is 4 weeks and pretty chilled so has a good couple of hours awake/content time. Definitely getting fussier but I would expect that in the next couple of weeks up til around the 6 week mark. He was going off his head this morning for a couple of hours and I lost my shit... Don't know what to do with a fussy baby any more!
