Bactrim - sorry long post

Hey ladies,
I looked for other posts about antibiotics on N15 but didn't find anything. My husband is removing the carpet and installing laminate throughout the house. We've had an ant problem since. We've used traps, poison, sprays and even fogged the other day. My problem is that the ants seem to only be biting me. I have bites all over my stomach, legs, and some on my arms. I went to my ob and she said leave them alone but they hurt and itch and get hard instead of drying out and going away. So I went back but this time she gave me Bactrim. Now I'm scared to take it because the warnings say do not take while preg and do not take if iron is low which it is. I don't know what to do. Please help!

Re: Bactrim - sorry long post

  • Sorry I can't help for the antibiotic.... But We had an ant infestation recently, and traps did not do anything. We tried vinegar, did not work. I ended up placing basil leaves and crushed garlic all over my kitchen. In two days, they had all left !! We had been fighting with them for over a month.

If your ob gave it to you it should be alright. She did not send you to a dermatologist but you could ask for another opinion on these bite marks if they dont fade ?

    Good luck !

We can't really help you with this. Either go back and discuss your fear with her, talk with a different doctor, or accept her medical judgment.

But us Internet strangers can do nothing for you in this situation as we are not medical professionals.

Edit - me and auto correct do not get along.
  • I would call and voice your concern about the antibiotic even though she gave it to you.. But my mom always has an ant problem and the raid in the spray can that says it kills ants works pretty well but I think you should try what PP said first since the spray is a bunch of chemicals!
  • I am not a doctor and I am FTM, so no experience in this, but if it were me I would not hesitate to get a second (professional) opinion. Also, I would look up or ask about natural, pregnancy-safe alternatives.
My doctor gave me new iron supplements, totally different I know but the point being that he had clearly not looked at my paper work because my iron had consistently been at great levels. I just think little things like that show how ready doctors are sometimes to just give you something.. I haven't taken the supplements and my iron has been great and I don't have the constipation that comes along sometimes with iron supplements.
  • I want to add that I didn't just ignore my doctor. I had a feeling it was unnecessary and asked one of my nurses who has seen me a lot and seems to pay more attention and care about an old school as little medication as possible approach. :)
  • No advice on the antibiotic but we had ants and used cinnamon. Put it out for about 3 days and they were gone!
  • What type of ants?
  • Corn meal! It seems to work in the NW. They take it back but can't digest it. Cheap and worth a shot, sounds a little like fire ants though. Do you have an infection? Maybe you just need a topical anti-biotic or steroid cream. Dermatologist might be able to help. You could always do a day or two out of the house to see if it's the ants since no one else is getting bitten.
  • I had an ant bite around 20 weeks which was impossibly itchy. Midwife had me use cortisone cream but Aveeno only and no more than twice a day. Maybe ask for an alternative but that may depend on whether or not your bites are infected.
  • Thanks a lot ladies! I will definitely call my ob in the morning and ask for Keflex. I'm also going to try the cinnamon garlic and basil. Rubirubi89 they're small black ants that I guess we're hiding in the carpet. Dr. says they're probably only biting me cause my body is making more blood than normal.
  • Do you have any pets? Sounds more like flea bites than ants...
  • Grits also works to kill ants.  They take them back to the nest, eat them and then the grits expand with the moisture they take in and it kills them.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • Update: I called Dr. She said no to Keflex and that what she prescribed is not at all dangerous because it's less than a normal dosage and she seemed a little defensive saying that she would never prescribe anything harmful to me or baby or jeopardize her practice.
  • Glad you checked anyway! Hope your bites clear up fast with the treatment and you get rid of the ants ASAP
  • Yes OP, have you taken it and how are the bites?
  • I'm taking it and the bites are a lot less swollen and less itchy. One even burst and gross puss came out. I just think they're going to scar but right now I really don't care as long as they're not hurting or itching anymore.we an exterminator and he said it is fire ants.

I would not take it. Cat d drug positive feral risks
  • I would be switching obs for not listening to my concerns
  • She did listen and reassured me that it's OK. I feel better now that I am taking it especially since puss came out after I started taking it. It means It was infected. Sometimes infections can turn serious and I'd rather take care of it asap.
