Baby Wearing and the Outside World

I haven't particularly started adventuring out into the real world with baby, but I'm growing curiouser and curiouser on the prospect of wearing him whilst out shopping. Pushing him in the stroller is grand but not probable when grocery shopping.

I suppose my question is: how do you baby wearing mamas get baby from car seat to wearing mode?

The whole idea seems daunting and will bring an unprecedented level of frustration to an already time consuming activity of grocery shopping. I have an Ergo but I imagine the process of getting baby from seat to wearing is similar regardless of wearing method.

Re: Baby Wearing and the Outside World

  • With practice it becomes a quick routine. I don't have any tips or advice other than "practice".
My LO loves being in our moby, and DS and I love that my hands are free for other things. (Not to mention, the cart is able to be filled - no car seat in the way.)

Yep. It was terrifying for me at first too. LO is almost 6 weeks old now and we successfully transfer from car seat to Bjorn or Boba almost every day. Just takes practice.
  • I occasionally use a baby bjorn. At first it was tricky but with practise it gets much easier. Have a helper on hand when you first do it, and try getting it on and off a few times, if baby is amenable.

With the baby bjorn I get the straps on and have four of the six buckles done up, then I slot baby in, adjust his legs so they are coming out of the holes, then buckle his arms in. Done!
  • We have a happy baby wrap and I put it on before I leave the house. Then, when I get to wherever I'm going I just grab baby from her car seat and pop her in! I practiced a few times in front of a mirror and then without. Sometimes I use the car reflection to help out :)
  • It's annoying to get her out of the car seat, but once you do, you just throw them in the wrap and off you go.  After a couple of times you realize it isn't too big of a deal!

  • I have the Boba wrap and I always put it on at home before I go run my errands so I don't have to worry about putting it on in the parking lot. It's pretty easy to get LO in and out once the wrap is on.

  • Im using my moby out for the first time Sunday at a pumpkin patch. Its a bit of a drive (little over an hour) but I had still planned on just wearing the wrap the whole ride and just putting on at the house. It seems much easier this way.
  • I thought it seemed daunting too and I would not do it much since she's always asleep when we arrive at a destination. After lugging that car seat into the store I realized it's actually easier to take her out and get her I her wrap. If she does wake up in the process she falls right back asleep. She loves being in the ktan and it's much easier having her in there than in the car seat.
  • A friend of mine gave me a Hotsling carrier but it's too small :(( I emailed the company to see if I could exchange it, but I have yet to hear back from them. I'm dying to baby wear!

This is my routine too :-) love the boba wrap!
  • Definitely practice. I use either a woven wrap or a kinderpack most of the time with my 5 week old. The kinderpack is definitely easier (similar to how and ergo would be). Most of the time I try to get where I am going, nurse baby real quick in the car to top her off if it has been more than a half hour or so since last feeding (I bring a snack for my toddler to eat while she waits), then put baby into carrier, and off we go. I'm hoping once she gets a little more head control I'll be able to nurse her on the go, but right now its just not working for me.
  • we went out by ourselves for the first time today! LO is 3 weeks...

I took my ring sling with us - pretightened to fit her - and it was SO much easier than I thought. We went straight from car seat to ring sling and she didn't even wake up!
It's definitely a lot scarier to think about, but once you do it you're gonna be alright :)
  • DD is really hit or miss with being worn. Sometimes she goes right in and falls right asleep, other times she fights it and arches her back, kicks her legs, and screams her head off. Due to this, I only attempt to wear her while at home so I can fold some laundry or something... I want to wear her more and out!
  • I did a couple trial runs before wearing DS out while doing errands. I wore him in the house and on some walks. Like pp said, I use the reflection in the window if I need it. It does go faster the more you use it.

  • Can't wait to be able to wear my LO! I have the ergo carrier with the infant insert but LO has to be 7lbs to fit in it! She's having troubles gaining weight but I'm hoping we'll have good news at her appt Friday and she'll be at 7lbs! Fingers crossed!
